Abstract
397,152. Yarn-winding machines. UNIVERSAL WINDING CO., 95, South Street, Boston, U.S.A. Feb. 18, 1932, No. 4886. Convention date, April 13, 1931. [Class 120 (ii).] In a yarn and like winding machine comprising a winding-spindle rotated at constant angular speed, and a rotatable traverse roller with a helical guide for the yarn, the traverse roller is driven frictionally from the periphery of the yarn package and the helical guide extends along the traverse roller a distance equal to the length of the package to be wound. The sides 6 of a frame member 5 carry upright arms 7 supporting bearings 8 for a rod or shaft 9, held in the bearing by collar 10. The shaft 9 has pivoted hubs 13 which carry a frame 12 an extension 14 from which supports an arm 16 which is rockable about a pivot 15 and which in turn supports, in a bearing 18, the winding spindle 20. The arm 16 is counterweighted by a weight 21. A collar 22 on the winding spindle abuts at one end against the bearing 18, the other end entering into a recess in the base of the frustro-conical wooden or fibre tube 1 held on the winding spindle by a nut 45 at the end thereof. The other end of the spindle 20 has a reduced portion 19 to which is keyed a flanged pulley 25 held in position by a nut 27. The pulley 25 is driven by a belt 31 from a pulley 30 secured to a stud shaft 32 journalled in bearings 33 and carrying another pulley 36 driven by a belt 39 from a pulley 40, on a drive shaft 41 driven from an electric motor or other suitable source of power. Suitable clutch mechanism or a loose pulley 42 with belt shifting mechanism may be provided to disconnect the drive when desired. The yarn is traversed by a roller 50 having oppositely extending helical grooves 51, 52, so formed as to prevent the yarn from being diverted from one groove to the other. The roller 50, which is of fibre or hollow metal is secured to a shaft 57 mounted in ball bearings in hubs 55 on the arms 56, by means such as a set screw 61 and is frictionally rotated from the periphery of the yarn package. In operation the yarn y passes from a suitable source through a wire threadguide 73 with a re-entrant mouth, a slit plate 72 acting as slub-catcher, and between tension discs 67 mounted on a cross pin 66 and pressed together by a spring 68 adjustably weighted by weights 70 on a lever 71, to the grooves in the traverse roller 50 which lay it on the yarn packages. When commencing to wind the yarn is attached to the cop-tube T for example by winding it in the groove g. The increase in diameter of the yarn package causes an acceleration of the traverse-roller so that there is a progressive variation in the number of turns wound during a complete traverse. The slight slipping which occurs between the roller 50 and the wound mass destroys any synchronism between the rotation of the package and the yarn traverse and hence eliminates the possibility of a "ribbon wind." If desired the traverse roller may be frictionally driven from the yarn package by means of an intermediate roller. Suitable stop mechanism may be fitted to the machine for operation on breakage of the thread, exhaustion of the supply, or attainment of the desired size of yarn package. The machine may be adapted to wind parallel sided or cylindrical packages, or cops and bobbins of other forms and may be an individual unit or may form part of a " gang " of similar units. Specification 339,679, [Class 120 (ii), Spinning, twisting, &c.], is referred to.
