Abstract

519,154. Winding yarn or cord. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. April 5, 1939, No. 10627. Convention date, April 14, 1938. [Class 120 (ii)] A cord winding machine comprising a supply spool, power-driven take-up means and a pair of , rotating stretching rollers for stretching the cord as it passes from the supply to the take-up means is provided with a stop-motion operable upon breakage or exhaustion of the supply and arranged to stop the winding operation before the trailing end of the cord reaches the stretching rollers. The arrangements preferably includes means for braking the supply spool and the stretching rollers. As shown in Fig. 1, cord C is drawn from the supply spool 10 through a detector 43 to the pair of stretching rollers 32, 33 and through a detector 46 to the take-up package 14. Upon breakage or exhaustion the arm 38, carrying the detector 43 and weighted at 41, falls and pulls down a wire 47 connected to a lever 26' which is then engaged by the usual catch 28 on a rocking shaft 29; a member 22 is then swung down about pivot 23 and the package 14 raised by the brake member 21 clear of the driving drum 19 and winding is stopped. At the same time the stretching rollers 32, 33 are braked and the turns of cord thereon held by member 35 which is connected to the member 22, and the supply spool is braked by brake block 51 mounted on a lever pivoted at 50 and actuated through a spring 53 by the abutment 54 when the wire 47 descends. The arm 38 carrying the guide 43 is raised for re-threading by depressing the pedal 61. The stop-motion is also actuated and the parts braked upon breakage of the cord between the stretching rollers and the package 14 by reason of the detector 46 being attached to a second lever 26' mounted coaxially with the first. The two cord stretching rollers 32, 33 may be in the form of stepped pulleys with cord receiving grooves or they may be plain conical rollers 66, 67, Fig. 6, with their axes inclined.
