Abstract

Class 120(2) A winding machine includes a pivotally- or slidably mounted package holder, a traverse cam and reciprocating thread guide, means for rotating the package holder and traverse cam and means for regulating the movement of the package with increasing diameter by using the rotation of the package to drive a lightly loaded wheel or rol- 1er which in turn transmits motion to mechanism to move the package as it builds up by positively moving out the package at a predetermined rate and at the same time progressively decreases the package spindle and traverse speeds in correspondence. In the arrangement shown the spindle 10 on which the yarn package 16 is wound is driven from shaft 23 through friction discs 21, 20, the former being integral with a boss 22 slidable on the shaft 23, and pairs of stopped pulleys 18, 17 reciprocated by a traverse cam housed in box 25 and rotated by shaft 26 driven from the shaft 14 through coned pulleys 28, 27 and belt 29. The latter is adapted to be shifted along the pulleys by a bell shifter wrapped by belt 19. Thread guide 31 is 30. A roller 32 is freely mounted at opposite ends in a pair of pivotally mounted bell-cranked levers 33, 34 each Weighted so as to keep the roller 32 in contact with the package 16. In operation, when the diameter of the package 16 reaches a cer- .tain point the roller 32 is pressed back until it contacts a friction wheel 38 on shaft 39 which is thus rotated and through a reduction gearing in gear-box 40 moves a rack 56 outwards in the direction of arrow B and so forces the spindle housing 11 and thereby the package 16 outwards for a predetermined distance. This action breaks the drive to the wheel 38 until such time as the package size again causes contact between the roller 32 and the wheel 38. During the gradual outward movement of the rack 56 the lever 57 is rocked about pivot 58 and causes the boss 22 and driving disc 21 to be slid along the shaft 23 thereby reducing the rotational speed of the disc 20 and consequently the spindle and traverse speeds. When the package 16 reaches its predetermined diameter or on breakage of the yarn a stop motion operates to disengage the disc 20 from disc 21.
