Class 120(2) The speeds of separate yarns in a doubling machine are equalized by passing the yarns 1, 2, 3, Fig. 2, simultaneously in the same direction round a freely rotatable guide pulley 4, the pulley having parallel grooves, the diameters at the bases of which being equal and each yarn being in a separate groove, the rotation of the pulley being occasioned merely by the drag of the yarns. The yarns may be passed around two such pulleys, 4 and 5, Fig. 4, the yarns 2 and 3 being led on to the pulley 5 and after passing round the pulleys 5 and 4 being led off the pulley 4. The yarn 1 is led on to pulley 4 and passes round the pulleys 4 and 5 and is led off pulley 5. Embodiments are also described in which two yarns pass around one or two pulleys. A doubling device may comprise a rotatable shaft 11 comprising thread-guiding bowls 15 and 18 in which yarn packages 20 and 21 are mounted upon bearings and are prevented from rotating by weights 14 and 17. Yarn 19<SP>1</SP> is led from a package 19 through a brake 27 and guides 28, and through guides 29 and 30 in the bowl 15. It enters the hollow shaft 11 at 31 and leaves again at 32 and passes through guides 33 and 34 in the bowl 18. Yarn 20<SP>1</SP> from the package 20 passes into the hollow shaft 11 through a brake 37 and then follows the course of the yarn 19<SP>1</SP>. The yarn package 21 is enclosed in a box 22 rigidly united with the bearing 16 and carries a hollow spindle 24 upon which is rotatably mounted a cage 25 carrying the pair of grooved pulleys 4 and 5. Yarn 21<SP>1</SP> from the package 21 passes through a brake 39 and through the hollow spindle 24 on to the pulleys 5 and 4. The yarns 19<SP>1</SP> and 20<SP>1</SP> pass through a spindle cap 26 by means of which they cause the cage 25 to rotate with the shaft 11, and over the pulleys 4 and 5 and are doubled with the yarn 21' at 40.
