Abstract

572,026. Twisting yarns &c. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. Feb. 2, 1944, No. 1903. Convention date, June 9, 1943. [Class 120 (ii)] [Also in Group XXV] Mechanism for twisting together a plurality of yarns, threads, &c. comprises two let-off packages 10, 11 on which the yarns &c. are wound, means 48, 49 for drawing off the yarns &c. from the packages, means 20 for rotating as a balloon about the one package the yarn &c. drawn off from the other package and twisting the yarns &c. together, and tension means actuated by the tension of one yarn to vary the tension in the other yarn whereby, according to the variation of tension produced, one yarn will be caused to wrap about the other to form an open cover about it or the two yarns will be twisted together about a common axis to form a plied construction without any appreciable change in the twist of each individual yarn about its own axis. The strand 12 from package 10, stationarily mounted on a supporting cone 14, is led through a pigtail 17 to the eye 19 of a flier 20 being then led through a hole 26 to the inside of a rotary hollow tube 21. The strand 13 from the package 11, stationarily supported by the cone 27 on a tube 28, is passed about and then through a long tubular guide 33, detachably mounted in the tube 28. The tube 21 driven by the whorl 24, is supported in ball bearings 29, a weighted arm 31, 32 preventing the package support 27 and tube 28 from rotating. The yarns 12, 13 are led through a tension device comprising opposed rows of pins 37, 38, about which they are led in serpentine fashion, discs 41 rotatably carried by a shaft 39 being positioned between the pins 37, 38 and the yarn passing through holes 42 in the discs 41. The twisted strands 45, guided by a chuck 46 and fed by rolls 48, 49, are then collected on a take-up package.
