Class 120(ii) In a doubling or cabling device in which the primary twist of individual yarns is substantially unaltered, each yarn is guided between a fixed point on a rotary spindle and a fixed doubling point on the spindle axis, and passes through an intermediate moveable guide carried by the spindle in such a way that twist imparted during the movement of a yarn from its supply package to the intermediate guide is substantially cancelled out by that imparted during the movement from the guide to the doubling point, and a yarn from one package is ballooned by the rotating spindle about another package supported by the spindle, the ballooning being limited owing to a continuous rigid surface integral with the spindle and placed outside of and guiding the yarn, one package of elementary yarn being, placed outside the spindle on a support which is independent of the. spindle. As shown,. one yarn supply package 1 is mounted on bearings 4 on a rotary spindle 3 and is prevented from rotating by a weight 5. A bowl 6 fixed to spindle 3 surrounds package 1 and is provided with yarn guides 10, 20. Yarn 7 is drawn from package 1 via a flyer guide 8 from which it passes through guide 10 to a fixed guide 11. The other supply package 12 is fixedly mounted on a support 13. Yarn 14 is drawn from package 12 via a flyer guide 15 from which it passes through spindle 3, out through an opening 18 therein, through an opening 19 in bowl 6, along the inside of bowl 6 (to limit ballooning), through guide 20, and thence to guide 11. With each yarn, the twist inserted between the package and the guide 10 or 20 is removed as the yarn passes to guide 11, except for the slight twist imparted by flyer 8 or 15, so that after guide 11 the yarns porceed with substantially their original twist, and are plied together with a ply twist dependent on the speed of rotation of spindle 3 and the speed of wind on to a take-up, package 21.
