To reduce the occurence of irregularities arising from the tendency of the twist to run to thin places in the yarn in 2:1 outflow twisting apparatus, a false-twist device is positioned near the take-up means to engage the yarn emerging from the balloon, and is arranged to be rotated in the same direction as the flyer and at such a speed as to concentrate substantially all the twist which would otherwise be present in the balloon in the short length of yarn between the false-twist device and the take-up means. In Fig. 2, the twisted yarn is taken up on a package on a spindle 92 mounted on a pivoted arm 94 urged against one, 34 of two driven feed rollers 32, 34 which cooperate with a jockey 35 to feed the yarn from an adjacent twist-tube 30. The latter is rotated at twice the speed of the flyer to remove the twist in the yarn in the balloon and insert equivalent twist in the length of yarn between the tube and the rollers. To keep the length of yarn between the tube and the package constant, the twist-tube is reciprocated on the arm 94 is reciprocated along the shaft 96 on which it is pivoted by an arm 100 which is pivoted at one end, 102, and connected at the other to a follower 108 which is reciprocated along a rod 116 by a traversescroll 114. The flyer, the false-twist tube, the rollers 32, 34 and the scroll are driven from a common source. The package on the 2:1 apparatus is kept stationary by a weight 56, Fig. 3, not shown, or as in Specification 989968 Hdg. D1-2; the package may provide two yarn-ends or there may be two packages. When the yarn is wound on a conical former, the jockey 35 is in contact only with roller 32 which rotates more slowly than roller 34. In the case of a multi-spindle machine, the arms 34 do not slide on shaft 96, but the latter is arranged to be reciprocated by the arm 100.
