Abstract
615,575. Winding yarn &c. UNIVERSAL WINDING CO. June 21,1946, No. 18728. Convention date, July 3, 1945. [Class 120(ii)] Yarn winding mechanism comprises rotary means for supporting the yarn, a drive-roll to rotate the rotary means by peripheral contact with the yarn wound thereon, means for traversing the yarn in the direction of the length of the axis of the rotating means to form a package, the drive-roll and traversing means being mounted to recede from the rotary means as the package grows, and driving means arranged to drive the traversing means from the rotary means. The package P on the tube t carried by a spindle 10 is driven by frictional contact with a roll 15 driven by a belt 26 from a motor 30, the rotation of which is'governed by a switch through a starting handle 140, the roll 15 being pressed against the package by a strap 110 and weights 109. The belt 26 is adjustable over a number of pulleys 25, 27 to enable the speed of the roll 15 to be varied when necessary. The traverse of the yarn is effected through a light traveller 60 constructed of sheet metal or wire (see Fig. 6. not shown) and reciprocated along a bar 56 by cam 40 rotated by spur, chain and sprocket gearing from the spindle 10, the gearing being such that a slight "gain" is introduced to lay the thread convolutions side by side. The traverse cam comprises a helical rim 45 embraced by the traveller 60 which is thereby reciprocated on the bar 55, between the edges of a cam cover 46 as the cam rotates. The traveller may be arranged to contact, or stand away from, the package, as desired, and as the package grows and the roll 15 moves outwardly with its carrying frame 20, pivotally carried at 23, 24, the frame 32 carrying the cam 40 and also pivotally carried at 23, 24, is moved away from the spindle 10 by the reaction of rollers 125 guided for vertical movement in a slot 128 and also engaging curved slots 120, 122 in the frames 20, 32. A dogging device 80, 82 is fitted, which may be manually released to reset the machines for a new wind, to prevent motion of the cam 40 and roll 15 towards the spindle 10 during rewinding. The frame-moving slot 122 is formed in a member 121 adjustably attached at 123, 124 to the frame 20.
