Abstract

809,842. Winding yarn, traverse mechanism. STEEGER, W. June 20, 1956, No. 19064/56. Class 120(2) A traverse mechanism for a thread winding machine comprises a rutatably mounted reverse worm spindle, a thread guide supported for sliding movement in a direction parallel to the axis of rotation of the spindle, an elongated follower which is connected by a single pivot to the thread guide and engages a cam groove provided in the reverse worm spindle and is adapted to impart a rectilinear reciprocating movement to the follower and thread guide during continuous rotation of the spindle and to rotate the follower through a small angle at each reversal of the rectilinear movement of the follower, the pivot between the follower and the thread guide being so disposed that the rotation of the follower causes the thread guide to be displaced relatively to the centre of the follower. In the embodiment shown a casing h which houses a reverse worm q is arranged beside the winding spindle carrying the bobbin c and a thread guide a is non-rotatably connected with the casing h and bears against the bobbin by a roller b (Fig. 1). The thread-guide a is reciprocated along the casing h by a follower 2 (Fig. 10) engaging in an endless helical groove in the reverse worm q. The follower 2 is elongated and has at one end a journal 3 by which it is pivotally connected to the thread guide 1. With this arrangement the thread guide participates in the basic traversing movement of the follower 2 and is in addition displaced axially relatively to the centre of the follower when the latter rotates about its centre at the ends of the traversing movement. The speed of the winding spindle is adjusted for increase in bobbin diameter by means shown in Fig. 2. A cam g 'is rigid in rotation with the casing h so that as the latter is rotated by the increasing bobbin diameter the cam g is rotated and, through a belt crank lever f adjusts the adjustable cone belt pulley e driving the winding spindle. The reverse worm q is driven from the winding spindle through an adjustable belt cone pulley i. To enable bobbins of different lengths and also frusto-conical bobbins to be wound the main winding spindle p is axially displaceable. For this purpose a helically grooved cam m (Fig. 4) is rotatably but non-slidably mounted on the spindle p and is rotated through reduction gearing from the reverse worm spindle. The cam m engages with a roller o rotatably mounted in a fixed but adjustable position so that as the cam m rotates, it axially displaces the spindle p. The traverse movements of the thread guide and the winding spindle can be adjusted relatively to one another by rotating the flanged member n by means of handle r. This can be done by hand or the handle r can be replaced by a lever connected to the casing h so that it is automatically adjusted in accordance with the diameter of the bobbin being wound. In a scond embodiment the drive is through a potter's wheel type of drive, 'the whole winding head being mounted so that it can move on roller or ball bearings and the head is moved in response to bobbin diameter by the casing h such that the drive ratio is varied to change the speed of the winding spindle. With this arrangement there is an automatic release means to disengage the friction discs of the potter's wheel when the bobbin has. reached a predetermined size.
