Aug. 23, 1933, No. 23460. Convention date, Oct. 20, 1932. Addition to 258,428, [Class 120 (ii)]. [Class 120 (ii).] In yarn guides for the winding mechanism of winding, spooling, twisting-at-delivery and rayon spinning machines a yarn guide rod 8 is reciprocated as described in the parent Specification by two oppositely rotating screwed spindles 6, 7 alternately engaged with two spring controlled segmental nuts by means comprising a finger and a template 9, which is displaceable in two directions, and is automatically moved in the direction perpendicular to the rod 8 so that the path of the rod is gradually shortened during the winding operation. The yarn guide rod 8 has an arm 12 connected to a rod 13, which carries an adjustable pawl 14 to coact with a ratchet wheel 15 and hence reciprocate in a direction parallel with the rod 8 a slide 11 by mechanism not shown. The rod 13 also carries a pawl 16 which rocks an arm 18 on a shaft 19, the arm 18 carrying a segment 20, adjustable by means of a slot 21 and screw 22, and provided with a nose 23 which by striking an abutment 24 on an arm 25 causes a pawl 26 to rotate a ratchet wheel 27. An arm 30 rotatably mounted on the shaft 19 carries a shaft 31 with a worm 32 and a toothed wheel 33 connected when the arm 30 is in the appropriate position with the wheel 27 by change gears 34, 35, 36. With the arm 30 in the position shown in Fig. 1 therefore, rotation of the wheel 27 rotates the worm 32, through gears 33, 34, 35, 36, and the worm 32 is in engagement with a rack 37 carried by a slide 10 to which the template 9 is fixed, and which is movable on the slide 11 in a direction perpendicular to the rod 8. A handle 38 permits the arm 30 to be rocked to disengage the worm 32 from the rack 37 so that the template 9 can be moved by a handle 39. The initial position of the template is determined by an adjustable abutment 40. The movement of the template in a direction perpendicular to the rod 8 shortens the stroke of the thread guide and enables packages with tapered ends to be wound on plain unflanged tubes.
