[Class 120 (ii).] In a bobbin - winding machine wherein the throw of the thread guide is controlled by a swashplate and is gradually reduced to produce bobbins with conical ends, the means which effects reduction of the traverse simultaneously effects a reduction in the speed of the winding spindle, thus allowing the thread to be wound at a constant rate. The swashplate 11, Figs. 1 and 2, which is driven from the shaft 7 by means of friction wheels 6, 3 and pinions 8, 9 causes the sliding carriage 13 to reciprocate on the bar 53 and tube 16, and so traverse the thread guide 14 fixed to the rod 15 which slides inside the tube 16 and is connected to the carriage 13 by means of a pin 54 passing through a slot in the tube. A crank 33, Fig. 3, mounted on the main shaft 10 actuates a ratchet and pawl 29, 48 supported on a lever 46 pivoted at 47. The ratchet 29, through reduction gearing 28, 27, 26, 50 slowly rotates the pulley 24 round which a wire 23 is wound, the other end being attached to the stirrup 22. This causes the traverse mechanism i.e. bar 53, tube 16 and carriage 13 to rotate about the axis of the tube, whereby the contacting pins on the carriage 13 are moved across the swashplate towards its centre and so decrease the traverse. At the same time, the fork 40 attached to the end of the tube 16 slides the driving disc 6 across the face of the friction disc 3 and so increases the spindle speed, the spindle being driven through pinions 8, 36. When the winding of the bobbin is completed, the hand shaft 34 is pulled ; this moves the worm wheel 50 clear of the worm 26 and so disengages the pulley 24 from the ratchet mechanism, whereupon torsional springs 35 rotate the traverse mechanism into its original position.
