Winding-machines. - In cross - winding machines provided with automatically variable traverse mechanism and in which the spindle and the cam drum are driven at a constant speed, the reciprocating thread guide or a member connected thereto actuates mechanism to impart axial movement to the cam drum, so that the traverse of the guide is varied to produce tapered or bulged bobbins. A cam drum 4 oscillates the guide bar 1, and is oscillated along its shaft by a rod 19 secured to a lever 14 which is operated by a bracket 5 on the bar 1. The bracket 5 is connected to a lever 8 the lower part of which is formed as 'a disc 7, which is slotted to receive a sliding block 10, Fig. 4, adjustably secured to the lever 14. By means of a pawl 24 on a concentric disc 23 the disc 7 gradually rotates a disc-wheel 27', which is provided with a spiral crown-thread 26 whereby it gradually lowers or raises a rack 29 which carries the pivot pin of the lever 14. The rack is returned to its initial position by a spring 33 when the disc-wheel 27<1> is removed therefrom by a lever 37, which is operated independently or by the counterhold 40 of the winding-spindle when this is withdrawn upon the completion of the winding. A bowl on an adjustable disc corresponding to the disc 23 may be arranged to operate a lever which, in one modification, operates the disc-wheel 27<1> by a friction ratchet gear, and, in another modification, operates a ratchet wheel on a screw-shaft which engages the rack 29, the screw-shaft being mounted in a pivoted yoke so that it may be disconnected from the rack.
