Thisl invention is for improvements in or relating to machines for winding yarn and the like on cops or bobbinsr. The object of the invention is to enable such a machine to benadjusted easily `and quickly so as to wind cops or bobbins of different diameters, lengths and shapes.
According to the present invention, a winding machine comprises a traverse-rod having an eX- tension on which the progression-wheel' is mounted and means for adjusting the said extension laterally of the traverse-rod whereby the distance between the progression-wheelr and the axis of the winding-spindle may be varied. The'said means may comprise` a pin-and-slot connection, more fully described below, between the traverserod and the said extension and an adjustable bracket for supporting the remote end of the extension. j
According toanother featureofthe invention, the inner end of the said extension is slotted to receive within it a former-bar attached to the outer end of the traverse-rod and zzo-operating with rthe hub of the `progression-wheel so as to build the heel of a cop onfa plain tube. This former-bar takes the place of the usual external bar co-operating with` a projection on the thread guide. 1
According to yet another feature of the invention, cam-mechanism is provided for reciprocating the traverse-bar with a varying speed of movement during each stroke. In this way, a rm non-shattering chase is obtained. 1

rotation of the pulley drives the spindle. The right-hand end of l the Aspindle carries spring-iingers 23 Vto engage the end 24 of a copholder; the other end 25 of the cop being supported by a centering-spindle 26 mounted in bearings in a plunger 21 pressed towards the cop by means of a spring 28 and slidable in a guide 29. The plunger 21 terminates in a knob 30 whereby it may be retracted manually.
The worm I1 (see Figure 2) engages anddrives a worm-wheel 3| having cut in its face acamtrack vof two portions 32 and 33. The track is engaged lby a follower 34 on the shorter arm 35 of a bell-crank lever 35, 36, pivoted to the frame at 31. The arm 36 is pivoted to a link 38 which is in turn pivoted at 39 to a traverse-rod 46 slidable in a tubular guide 4I and in a bush 42.
vThe traverse-rod 40 carries a screw-threaded extension 43 pivotally attached to it as follows: As shown in Figures l, 2 and 4, a former-bar k4K6, more fullydescribed below, has a screw-threaded end 44 which engages the recessed end ofthe traverse-rod 40 and is secured against rotation with respect thereto by a lock-nut 45. The screwthreaded extension 43 ofthe traverse-rod is slotted, as shown in `F igure-2b', the former-bar 46 lying within this slot. vThe heel of the formerbar 46 is cut with a radial slot 41 through which passes. a pin 48 carried on the screw-threaded portion 43. The pin 48 is engaged by a tensionspring 49, the other end of which engages a pillar 56 aixed to a bracket 5I on the former-bar, so as to tend to move the screw-threaded portion downwardly, as seen inFigure l. This tendency is resisted, however, by an adjusting-screw 52 passing through the bracket5l and engaging with the enlarged head-portionf53 of the pin 48.
. The other end of the screw-threadedvrod 43 is mounted in a.universal-joint 54 in a sleeve 55 which is attached by ascrew 56 to a bracket 51 which is an extension from the-main frame I0.
The screw-threaded rod 43carries the usual .progression-wheel 58, the hub 59 of which is freely slidable along it, but which has a resilient wire 60 which passes through a slot in the hub into engagement with .the screw-threads,r so that the progression-wheel normally behaves as lthough it were screw-threaded to the rod 43.

In a winding machine fcrwinding yarn or the like in conical chases, the combination comprising a winding spindle, a thread guide, a slotted rod disposed alongside the winding spindle, traversing means for causing relative reciprocfation between the rod and the winding spindle longitudinally of the latter, a progression wheel cooperating with the thread guide and having a hub mounted on and in screw-threaded engagement with said rod and adapted progressively to displace the thread guide longitudinally thereof in accord-ance with the growth of the package, and a former-bar adapted to be received in the slot in said rod and having a-face inclined to the direction of the length of the winding spindle and adapted to cooperate with the interior of the hub of the progression wheel to displace the rod towards the winding spindle at the commencement of the formation of a package to build the heel thereof, and adjusting means including a projection on the rod and an adjustable stop member mounted directly on the former-bar and adapted toengage said projection, for adjusting the said rod towards and away from .the winding spindle to enable packages of different diameters to be wound.

In a winding machine, the combination comprising a winding spindle, a thread guide, a traverse-rod for reciprocating the thread guide longitudinally of the winding spindle, a slotted traverse-rod extension, a progression wheel having a hub mounted on said extension, a formerbar carried by the traverse-rod and adapted to be received in a slot in the traverse-rod extension and formed with a face inclined to the axis o-f the traverse-rod and adapted to cooperate with the interior of the hub and of the progression wheel to displace the traverse-rod extension laterally relatively to the traverse-rod, and means for adjusting the former-bar angularly about the axis of the traverse-rod.
6. In a winding machine, the combination comprising a traverse-rod, a slotted traverse-rod extension, a progression wheel having a hub mounted on and in screw-threaded engagement with said extension, a thread guide Straddlng the progression wheel, and a former-bar carried by the traverse rod and adapted to be received in the slot in the traverse-rod extension and formed with a concave face inclined to the axis of the traverse-rod, which face is adapted to cooperate with the interior of the hub of the progression wheel to displace the traverse-rod extension laterally relatively to the traverse-rod at the commencement of the formation of a package to build the heel thereof.
7. In a winding machine, the combination comprising a winding spindle, a thread guide, a traverse-rod for reciprocating the thread guide longitudinally of the winding spindle, a traverse-rod extension carrying said thread guide,
- progression mechanism for advancing the thread guide step-by-step along the traverse-rod extension, said progression mechanism including a progression wheel having a hub mounted on said extension, a pin and slot connection coupling the traverse-rod and its extension together for endwise movement and permitting adjustment of the traverse-rod extension transversely of the traverse-rod towards and away from. the Winding spindle, a former-bar carried by the traverse-rod, a cam face on the former-bar adapted to cooperate with the progression mechanism to displace the traverse-rod extension towards the winding spindle at the commencement of the formation of a. package to build the heel thereof, a bearing member for supporting that end of the traverse-rod extension which is remote from the traverse-rod, means for adjusting the traverse-rod extension transversely of the traverse-rod, said adjusting means including means for adjusting said bearing member both vertically and horizontally, means for mounting the former-bar and the pin and slot connection on the traverse-rod so as to be angularly adjustable about the axis of the traverse-rod through a continuous range of settings, and means for securing the former-bar and the pin and slot connection to the traverse-rod in adjusted position.

In a winding machine, the combination comprising a winding spindle, a traverse-rod mounted for reciprocatory movement longitudinally of the winding spindle, a former-bar, means formounting said former-b-ar on one end of the traverse-rod in alignment therewith and for angular adjustment about the axis of said rod, a traverse-rod extension, a pin and slot connection coupling the traverse-rod extension and the former-bar together for endwise movement and permitting movement of the traverse-rod extension transversely of the former-bar towards and away from the winding spindle, a bearing member for supportingY the end of the traverse-rod extension remote from the traverse-rod, a thread guide carried by said traverse-rod extension and adapted to reciprocate longitudinally of the spindle with the traverse-rod, progression mechanism for advancing the thread guide step-by-step along the traverse rod extension, said progression mechanism including a progression wheel having a hub mounted on said extension and adapted, when near the end of said extension adjacent the traverse-rod, to cooperate with said formerbar to displace said traverse-rod extension towards the spindle, means for adjusting the end of the extension adjacent the traverse-rod transversely of the axis of the traverse-rod, and means for adjusting the bearing supportingthe other end of the' extension both horizontally and vertically.
