This invention relates to cop winding machines comprising the combination of thread guide means with feed means and winding feeler means which latter means are intermittently advanced on a guide spindle by action of the feed means in dependence of the working operation by means of a screw bore, the guide spindle being provided with screw threads only on a portion of its circumference and the Winding feeler means cooperating toward the end of its traverse with a stop member arranged on the guide spindle, whereby the guide spindle is so rocked with the aid of additional means that the winding feeler means comes to bear on the portion of the circumference of the guide spindle devoid of screw threads in order to be slidingly returned on said spindle, whereupon, due to cooperation of the winding feeler means with a second stop member provided on the guide spindle the latter is rocked back into the initial position, thereby moving the screw bore of the winding feeler means into engagement with the screw thread of the guide spindle again,
By means of this arrangement the operation of the feed device is simplied in reliable manner.

The thread guide carrier rod I is longitudinally reciprocated during the cop building operation by a driving gearing arranged in a bo-X 35 and comprising a cam member-35 (Fig. 2), and by a driving member 38 which is controlled by a circumferential groove 31 of said member. The end of the thread guide carrier rod I remote from t-he gear box 35 is located in a mounting member 2 which is firmly connected to the gear box 35 by means of a supporting bar 39.
As shown in Figs. 6 and 7, on the thread guide carrier rod I* is mounted a sleeve y3 to which a carrier arm 5 for the thread guide 6 is secured by means of two screw nuts 4. On one of the nuts 4 abuts a coil spring 'l which acts on a locking sleeve 8 which is slid on the sleeve 3 and which, as shown in Fig. 6, cooperates by means of a conical inner surface with locking balls 9 which are distributed round the circumference of said surface and are aranged in holes in the sleeve 3. The locking balls 9 can be forced against the thread guide carrier rod I by the locking sleeve 8, in such a manner, that `this rod is connected with the sleeve 3 and thus with the thread guide E for common movement.
The conical feeler member I0, which, as shown in Fig. 8, is axially adjustable by means of screw Il relative to a carrier sleeve I2, cooperates with the carrier arm 5 of the thread guide 6. The sleeve I2 Which is provided at one end with an outer flange I3 carries at the other end an inner rim Illbeing arranged in a bore of this sleeve and having an embossed peripheral surface, Whilst a central portion of this sleeve has a threaded portion I5. The winding feeler member Iii is mounted by means of its carrier sleeve ,I2 on a guide spindle I6 having arthreadedportion Il which extends over a surface portion of the spindle I6 amounting to slightly less than half the circumferential length of this spindle. As shown in Figs. 8, r9, 12 and 13 the threaded portion I5 of the sleeve I2 is engaged with the threaded portion Il of the guide spindle I5. The spindle I6 is received at one end in the mounting member 2 and at the other in a mounting arm I8, as shown in Figs. 9 to 13, which arm is connected with the gear box 35 by means of a supporting bar 45. The mounting member has secured thereto a bushing I9 which receives the'guide spindle I6 and is provided with a helical changeover slot guide 25 extending over half the circumference of the bushing and engaging with a screw stud 2I secured crosswise to the guide spindle I6 so as to function as a guidepiece for the latter. On the spindle It are further secured two adjustable stop members 22, 23, the member 23 being in the form of a set collar. The member 22 may also be constituted by a setcollar if desired. The coaction of the pin 2I with the slot guide 2U of the stationary boss I9 serves to cause rotation of the guide spindle I5 about its own axis when this spindle is moved axially. Axial movement of the guide spindle I6 (to the right and thereafter to the left) is effected by means of the stops 22, 23 provided on it since the carrier sleeve I2 or the feeler I strikes against the stop 22 and later (on its return) against the stop 23, thus each time exerting a corresponding axial thrust on the guide spindle I5.
A slide is displaceably arranged on a rod 24 and carries, by means of a screw stud 26, a pivotal catch 21 which is provided within the extent of its hub portion with a downwardly directed nose 2S. A stop pin 29 secured to the slide 25 limits the range of rocking movement of the pivotal catch 21. The catch 21 is adapted for cooperation with a pin which is arranged on a projection of the carrier arm 5 of the thread guide 6. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a connecting piece 4I is provided which is connected with a control arm M by means of a rod 42 and another connecting piece 43, the arm 44 being fastened to a shaft 45 which can be coupled to the driving gearing within the gear box 35.
A number of spools 3l are carried by spool holders or driving heads 45 mounted in common, in a manner known per se, by means of spindles, on a revolvable supporting member I1 which is fed through a part-turn each time after a spool has been wound by means of a feed device located within the box 35, whereby each time an empty spool 3| is moved into the working or winding position at which the respective driving head 45 l winding feeler member I0 and the thread guide 6 are in their initial positions as shown in Figs. 12 and 13. The slide 25 is in its position of rest. By the movement of the cam member 35 the rod I is actuated and the thread guide 6 is accordingly reciprocated whereby the initial portion of a winding 32 is formed by the thread on the spool 3| being located at the working position. During the winding, the rod I is reciprocated axially, causing the support arm 5 and the thread guide 6 to be correspondingly reciprocated and the thread to become wound up on the reeling member 3I. The reel of thread 32 then comes in contact with the feeler cone I0 which rotates as a result of the friction produced and therefore moves forward along the screw-threaded part I1 of the guide spindle I3. The winding feeler Ii), as it moves along, bumps into the projection 5 of the carrier arm 5 with the result that the axial thrust produced on the parts 3, 9 of the locking sleeve causes the latter to become released and moved one step forward on rod I. The spring 1 causes the bushing 8 to follow the parts 3, 9, whereupon the locking sleeve again rigidly engages the rod I. This produces the step-wise, intermittent, movement of the locking sleeve and hence of the thread guide 6 on the rod I. This intermittent feeding of the thread guide 6 requires the resistance of the compression spring 1 abutting on the locking sleeve 8 (Figs. 6 and 9) to be overcome, so that the clamping mechanism constituted by the sleeve 3, the locking balls 9 and the locking sleeve 8 is displaced for a small .feed step, whereupon this mechanism holds the thread guide 6 on the termination of the feed step in the new relative position of this guide to the rod` I;
The carrier arm 5 of the thread guide 6 slides during its reciprocating movement on the sleeve I2 of the winding feeler member I5. When the winding on the spool has almost reached the required length and the winding feeler member I0 is thus located near the end of its traverse, the slide 25 is advanced, that is, displaced in the direction away from the gear box 35, by the shaft 45 having been automatically coupled to the driving gearing and performing only one revolution. In the course of this movement a projection 49 provided on the slide 25 (Figs. 9 and 13) meets with the pin 3i) arranged on the carrier arm 5 of the thread guide 6, in consequence whereof the arm 5 then moves in unison with the slide 25. The carrier arm 5 in turn hits the flange I3 on the sleeve I 2 of the feeler means, whereupon this sleeve is also moved along by the slide 25. Since the feed movement of the sleeve will already have brought flange I3 into contact with stop member 22, the latter has pressure exerted on it by flange I3 which presses spindle I6 to the left so that guide slot 2B and stud 2l function to turn spindle IS as previously explained to bring spindle I5 into such position that threads I1 and I5 are out of engagement and sleeve I2 is free to slide in spindle I5, thereby hitting the stop member 22 on the guide spindle I5.
By influence of the resulting axial pressure effect on the guide spindle I6 the latter is turned for half a revolution by cooperation of the guide stud 2| on this spindle with the cam slot guide 21! in the stationary bushing I9. Consequently the threaded portion I5 of the sleeve I2 of the winding feeler means is moved out of engagement vwith the screw threads on the guide spindle I6 so that the feeding of the winding feeler member I is ceased. Thereupon, the member I then bearing on the circumferential portion of the guide spindle I6 devoid of screw threads is pulled back into initial position by sliding on this spindle. This is effected by the pivotal catch 21, having entered into engagement with the pin 3G on the carrier arm 5 during the advance movement of the slide 25, moving the arm 5 along during the return movement of the slide 25 following said advance movement. In the course of this operation the carrier arm 5 hits the winding feeler member IU by means of a projection 5' (Fig. 12), due to which the thread feeler means is coupled to the arm 5 so as to move the feeler along with it. During the movement of the slide member 25 from its position of rest, the flange I3 of the carrier sleeve I2 has engaged againstthe adjusting ring 22 of the spindle I6. The slide member 25 then forces the support arm 5 of the thread guide 5 (which it has picked up en route) against the flange I3 of the adjusting ring or stop 22 so as to produce half rotation of the guide Spindle I5, as previously explained. This disengages the screw-thread engagement of the carrier sleeve I2 so that it can be pulled back to the starting position when the member 25 returns.
In the course of the displacing movement of the slide 25 the revolvable supporting member 41 performs one rotational feed step for removing the fully wound spool fromthe working position and moving an empty spool into that position. As the slide 25 approaches the initial position the pivotal catch 21 hits a stud 33 with its nose 28, as shown in Fig. 12, whereby the catch 21 is rocked so as to release the pin 30. In the course of the return movement ofthe winding feeler member I0 the latter hits the stop member 23 ofthe guide spindle I6'so that this spindle is then turned for half a revolution again by cooperation of the guide stud 2l with the cam slot guide 2B in the stationary bushing I9, whereby the guide spindle is returned into position of operation. In this connection the threaded portion I1 of the guide spindle I6 enters again into engagement with the threaded portion l5 of the sleeve I2 of the feeler means so that operative connection between the guide spindle I6 and the winding feeler member i is re-established. In consequence of this the feed means provided by the winding feeler member l0 and the parts associated therewith is in condition for operation for beginning the winding of a new cop.
The spring disposed on rod 24 tends to keep the support of the winding member 3l against the winding member 3l in known manner. Upon termination of the winding procedure, the member 25, which has moved forward on the rod 24, serves to push back said support, against the action of the aforesaid spring, causing the finished, reeled spool 32 to become released at the proper place and to drop off from the spool spindle or from the rotary head 41.
By adjusting the two stop members 22, 23 arranged on the guide spindle I6 of the winding feeler member I0 the time of the beginning of cooperation of these members with the winding feeler member can be controlled. Further control is possible due to the axial adjustability of the winding feeler member relative to its carrier sleeve I2.
In the embodiment of the feed means described no stop frame is required for the winding feeler member. ing feeler member may, for example, also be in the form of a disc, in a manner known per se.
