Abstract
395,386. Bobbin &c. winding- machines. UNIVERSAL WINDING CO., 95, South Street, Boston, U.S.A. Dec. 16, 1931, No. 34888. Convention date, Sept. 2. [Class 120 (ii).] A winding-machine comprising a positively driven winding-spindle, a strand guide, traversing means interconnected with the winding- spindle for causing relative reciprocation between the strand guide, and the winding-spindle to traverse the strand material longitudinally of the latter, is provided with manually operable means for disconnecting the traversing means without arresting the rotation of the winding- spindle. A base 2, Fig. 1, supports a head stock 4 formed with bearings 6, 7 for a driving-spindle 5 which is operatively connected by a chuck 17 with an arbor 20 having its remote end tapered to engage a ball ring 25 in an adjustable tail stock 26 also supported by the base 2. Several coils, slightly spaced apart, are wound upon the arbor 20, the wires being fed to them by strand guides 42 operatively connected with an adjustable traverse mechanism. The traverse mechanism comprises a heart-shaped cam 90 loose on a shaft 95 but adjustably secured to a gear wheel 115 fixed thereto and driven through change gears 175, 170, a gear 168 and worm wheel 160 by a worm 150 on a sleeve 152 on the spindle 5. The sleeve is clutched to a collar 155 secured to the spindle and may be released therefrom, against spring action, by the engagement of a lever 205, Fig. 3, with a collar 157 on the sleeve. Rotation of the cam 90 reciprocates a slide 126, Fig. 1, in a trackway 130 having one end pivoted about the shaft 95 and the other adjustable along a slotted quadrant 135. A roller on the slide 126 engages in a vertical groove 123 in member 120 rigid with a rod 65 to reciprocate the rod to an extent determined by the angular position of the trackway 130. A crosshead 50 is fixed to the rod 65 and slides along a rod 51 which passes through a sleeve 56 clamped in the upper end of the crosshead. Pivoted with some friction on the ends of the sleeve 56, Fig. 5, is a plate 60 adjustably secured to a plate 48 carrying strand guides 42. These are maintained in close proximity to the wound coils by a bell-crank lever 70 having one arm engaging the underside of the plate 60 and the other contacting with a screw 75 adapted to be rotated in the crosshead 50, to raise the guides after the winding of each layer of wire, when a ratchet wheel 80 on the screw is engaged by a fixed pawl 82 at each reciprocation of the crosshead 50. The machine is driven by an electric motor controlled by a switch 225, Fig. 3, the operating rod 230 of which is normally held inoperative by a spring 233 but is adapted to be raised to complete the electric circuit by a clockwise movement of a handle 243 forming part of a lever 240 pivoted at 241 and having an arm 244 engaging the rod 230. The movement of the lever raises a catch 246 on the arm 244 from a recess in a bar 250 and permits a spring 255 to draw the bar to the left so that its end may support the lever 240 in the operative position. At the same time, a heel 278 on the lever 240 releases a brake from engagement with a hand-wheel 15 on the spindle 5. At the completion of each layer of wire, a layer of paper, fed intermittently by ratchet mechanism operated by the rotation of the shaft 95 of the traverse mechanism, is supplied to the coils. When a predetermined number of coils has been wound, a revolution counter rocks a lever 270, which alternatively may be manually operated, to draw the rod 250 to the right and allow a spring to draw down the lever 240. This permits the spring 233 to open the switch 225 and applies the brake to the hand-wheel 15. The strands of the wires are cut and secured prior to restarting the machine for severing the arbor to separate the individual coils. To effect this, the clutch lever 205 is operated by pulling forward a hand-lever 215, Figs. 1 and 5, on a rocking shaft 211 provided with a shoe 213 adapted to wipe over a face cam 207 on the lever 205, further movement of the lever raising circular knives 220 into contact with the arbor.
