Abstract

273,433. Joyce, J. D. May 3, 1926. Winding-machines; spindle-driving apparatus; stop-apparatus, non-automatic; stop-motions.-A yarn-winding machine comprises a winding-spindle 6, Fig. 2, a reciprocating thread-guide 64 mounted on a traverse-rod 70 and adapted to be progressed therealong, means operatively connected to the spindle 6 to reciprocate the traverse bar and stop means controlled by a rod 37 parallel with the spindle, the control-rod 37 being moved longitudinally to operate the stop means when the thread breaks or when the spindle is fully wound. The spindle 6 is screwed in the spindle-shaft 7 which is formed with a worm 14 and has a shouldered end 15 engaging with a shouldered sleeve 18, Fig. 5, to which is secured the friction disc 5. A spring 19 forces the disc 5 into contact with the driving-disc 4 on the shaft 3, Fig. 10. The rod 70 is traversed by an arm 76, Figs. 1 and 6, rocked by a slot 79 in a cam 80 driven by the worm 14. A brake lever 20 having two arms 22, 24 is pivoted at 21, and the pad 23 is urged by a spring 25 into contact with the disc 5. The arm 24 is flanged at 27 and adapted to be engaged by an arm 28 fixed on a rod 29 which also carries a collar 34 having a projecting arm 35. When winding normally a spring 43 keeps the rod 37 in such a position that the arm 35 is supported by the collar 42 whereby the arm 24 is checked by the arm 28 and the pad 23 held clear of the disc 5. The rod 37 also carries a collar 45 having a forked arm 47, flanged at 48, which straddles the traverse-rod 70, while the stop-rod 51, having collars 55, 56, carries an arm 49, Fig. 3, having opposite projections 50, 62, and a collar 57 rotatable on the rod and carrying a fork 61 which straddles the extension 62, and a thread-arm 58 having a flexible extension 59 and an eyelet 60 through which the thread passes on its way to the thread-guide 64. The progression-wheel 67, fixed to a sleeve 66 and carrying an arm 68 spring-pressed into engagement with the screwthread 74, is rotated by contact with the yarn and thereby moved along the rod 70. The thread normally holds up the arm 59 whereby the projection 50 is maintained out of the path of a collar 73 on the traverse-rod 70. When the yarn breaks the arm 58 falls, the projection 50 moves into the path of the collar 73 which thereupon moves the arm 47 and the rod 37 longitudinally and the collar 42 no lunger supports the arm 35. The spring 25 thereupon turns the brake-member 20 and the pad 23 forces the disc 5 away from the disc 4. A stop-arm 73a is provided on the rod 37 and adapted to be engaged by the sleeve 65 of the guide 64 when the winding is completed. The winding may of course be stopped manually at any time by moving the rod 37.
