Abstract
1,111,129. Winding sliver balls. JAMES MACKIE & SONS LTD. 2 July, 1965 [10 July, 1964], No. 28669/64. Headings DID and DIN. In apparatus for winding balls of sliver having a nozzle 20 for feeding sliver 12 to the ball 32 and means for traversing the nozzle and simultaneously rotating it to false twist the sliver, when the ball is nearly completed, the traverse mechanism is stopped shortly before the roller 33 driving the ball so that the sliver wound at the end of the wind has reduced or no twist to facilitate breakage of the sliver on doffing. In addition the sliver is wound at one position on the ball, preferably the centre, which facilitates the tucking in of the broken end. As shown sliver 12 leavs drawing frame rollers 11 and passes via Hollers 13, pulley 14 and nozzle 20 to the ball 32. Pulley 14 is mounted on pivoted arms 18, 15 so that the length of the sliver path between roller 18 and nozzle 20 is constant despite the traversing movement of nozzle 20. The nozzle is rotatably mounted on a carriage 17 reciprocated along slides 26 by an endless chain devise 27 which is circulated by sprockets on shaft 39 receiving drive from the drawing frame via a clutch and braking device 41. A gear 21 adjacent the nozzle 20 engages a fixed rack and nozzle 20 is thereby rotated during is traversing motion. When the wind is almost complete a switch 51 is operated by a counter so that when a switch 57, which has been operated once in each traverse cycle is next operated, a circuit is closed to open clutch 41 and brake the drive to the traversing mechanism. Simultaneously drive to the drawing frame and to the ball driving roller 33 is suspended but due to the motion of the parts a length of untwisted, untraversed sliver is wound onto the ball before it comes to rest. Also simultaneously an automatic doffing operation is initiated. Ball 32 is moved from roller 33 and a doffing plate 60 is moved by rotation of a threaded rod 61 to doff the ball from spindle 31. The plate 60, then engages a reversing switch which causes it to return to its normal position and in its movement operates switch 63 to restart the overall operation of the machine.
