Abstract

1,204,885. Winding sliver balls. JAMES MACKIE & SONS Ltd. 12 March, 1968 [16 March, 1967], No. 12448/67. Heading DIN. A sliver ball winding apparatus comprises a driving roller 15 which rotates ball 14 on rotatable spindle 16 to which the sliver is fed by a traversing nozzle 12 and a doffing mechanism for the completed ball which has controls to move the spindle 16 and completed ball 14 to a position which is axially spaced from the winding position by a distance greater than the axial dimension of the ball (see Fig. 2). A gripping member 106 is provided to engage the ball and prevent its return movement, (see Fig. 3). The spindle 16 is withdrawn axially from the ball so as to doff and return to a position adjacent the driving roller 15 for the start of a new ball. As shown, when yardage counter 18 indicates a complete ball has been wound, main motor 20 is stopped and auxiliary motor 22 started to drive the machine at a slower speed. Also bar 44 is moved into the path of the traversing nozzle 12 and is pushed to the right against spring 52. This causes the traverse and auxiliary motor 22 to stop and allow the last part of the sliver to be wound without crosswind. The ball 14 and spindle 16 is then swung away from the driving roller 18 and is moved to the left by pneumatic cylinder 88 acting on supporting frame 76. The leftward movement causes bar 44 to press against the sliver ball and trap the end thereof and causes knife 102 to sever the sliver end, holding plate 106, gripping a previously wound ball 14', is raised and ball 14' is pushed along and its place is taken by ball 14. Plate 106 is then lowered and the support 76 and spindle 16 return to the right to the winding position. If desired spindle 16 can be caused to pull a rigid tube into the centre of ball 14 as it returns, see Figs. 4 and 5 not shown. Bar 44 is raised away from the spindle to the inoperative position, knife 102 is swung back and spindle 16 is moved against driving roller 15 as the spindle returns to the winding position. The winding process is then restarted with the spindle 15 being pressed extra hard against roller 15 as the first layers of sliver are wound.
