Class 120(2) A yarn &c. winding machine comprises a main frame, a driven winding spindle, a traverse frame movable with respect to the spindle, a traverse guide mounted for reciprocation in the traverse frame, the spindle and traverse frame being so arranged that the path of reciprocation of the traverse guide at any moment is a substantially straight line against or near to the outer surface of the package and the traverse frame and spindle moving relatively one to the other during the building of the package so that at any point on the one moves rectilinearly relatively to the other. As shown in the embodiment of Fig. 1, the yarn package is wound on a tube 116 on the spindle 117 rotatably mounted in the frame 124 and driven by a belt 125. Gearing 127 drives the shaft 123 carrying the traverse cam 119, the slot 122 of which moves a following - roller 204 to reciprocate slide 202 between spaced guide bars 203. The upper roller 201 of the slide 202 engages within the lower slot of an H-sectioned arm 120 pivotally mounted about a vertical shaft 112. A small roller 109 carried by the traverse bar 105 engages the upper slot of the H-sectioned bar 120 to reciprocate the yarn traverse guide 103. A roller 102 attached to the traverse frame 101, as the package builds moves rectilinearly, the traverse frame 101 along a bar 111, the upper bar 107, attached to the frame 101, moving in 'bearings 108. In the embodiment described, the traverse becomes smaller as the frame 101 approaches the adjustable pivot 112. Fig. 3 shows a further embodiment in which the bar 320 of H-section is oscillated about a pin 312 carried by a bell-crank lever 343 mounted on a shaft 344. A small roller 345 on the bell-crank lever 343 moves in a slot 346 in an interchangeable plate 347 mounted on the traverse frame 324. As the traverse frame 324 moves away from the spindle, the form of package wound will have normal conical ends at first, but as the roller 345 moves along the slot 346 the bell-crank 343 will move the pivot 312 to decrease the traverse the roller at a higher rate to produce a package of rounded shape. In a further modification, the bar 120 is not oscillatable and the angle between it and the traverse bar is adjustable to that different shaped packages may be formed with a constant length of traverse throughout the wind. Further, the pressure roller 102 may be dispensed with and the yarn traverse guide be arranged to contact the yarn package. Arrangements may be included to maintain a constant pressure between yarn package and traverse frame whatever the position of the frame. This may be effected by a tension spring and a cam-like sector carrying a linkage attached to the frame, or by a spiral spring and lever arrangement bearing against the frame. In a further modification, Fig. 8, the winding spindle 817 rotates in an auxiliary housing 824 slidable along bars 807, 811 of the main frame 828 as the package increases in size, whilst the traverse frame 801 remains fixed. The spindle is driven by a disc 829, balls 831, 832, mounted in a carriage 833, the balls deriving their drive from a shaft 834. As the package grows, the spindle speed will be reduced and at the same time the oscillating bar 820, pivoted at 812, will impart a shorter traverse to the thread guide 804. In a further modification, the arrangement is such that the yarn package is wound with the shortest traverse inside and the logest traverse outside. Alternative means are described whereby the traverse bar 120, 320, 820, is driven from the traverse cam linkage which is stated to reduce the frictional resistance between traverse bar and traverse frame.
