809,866. Spindle driving and stopping arrangements; tension regulating. HOLLANDSE SIGNAALAPPARATEN, N.V. June 22, 1956 [June 24, 1955], No. 19421/56. Class 120(2) In a yarn winding machine of the kind in which a take-up spindle is driven by a pulley 19, Fig. 1, against which a driven belt or rope 18 is pressed with variable force by a displaceable idler pulley 14, the yarn, on its way to the take-up package, passes in a loop over a pivoted arm 1 biased in the direction of maximum loop length, arm 1 being coupled to a movable support 16 of pulley 14 so that when the length of the yarn loop is decreased the corresponding displacement of pulley 14 results in a decrease of pressure of belt 18 against pulley 19. As shown, Fig. 1, yarn from a skein 3 passes over a rod 5 and in a loop over a guide roller 2 to the take-up tube 6. Roller 2 is carried by arm 1 which is counter-weighted at 9 and pivoted in a block 11 on a support 12. When unwinding is impeded by entanglement of the skein, roller 2 is pulled downwardly and the movement of arm 1 acts through a link 13 and an arm 23 to swing support lever 16 up about a pivot 17 whereby the pressure of control pulley 14 against belt 18 is gradually relieved. If no further unwinding is possible, arm 1 is rotated to such an extent that pulley 14 is lifted completely from belt 18 and the spindle is stopped. In another arrangement, Fig. 4, an additional yarn guide pulley 301, carried by a spring-mounted arm 302. has a low moment of inertia compared with the control arm and absorbs any rapid variations in the unwinding speed. A flexible coupling 312 ensures that movements of pulley 307, due to operation of a stop motion, are not transmitted to the control arm. Stop motion contacts 308, 309 may be provided; these contacts close to stop the machine when pulley 307 moves beyond a position corresponding to the highest permissible winding speed, as when the yarn breaks or runs out. To avoid movement of pulley 307 influencing adjacent spindles, pulley 367 may be arranged to rest on the belt between the spindle driving pulley 310 and an auxiliary idler pulley 311 with a fixed axis.
