Abstract

1,084,652. Winding yarns continuously doffing packages. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. Oct. 26, 1965 [Oct. 26, 1964], No. 45261/65. Headings D1D and D1J. A continuous yarn winding apparatus has a bobbin driving roll 22, Fig. 3, over which yarn 26 is traversed before being wound onto a tube pressed against the roll 22 by a first chuck (20) (not shown), there being a second chuck 18 that presses a fresh tube against the driving roll 22 when the first chuck 20 has been moved to a doffing position, characterised in that each chuck 18, 20 has a groove (52), Fig. 2 -(not shown), containing V-shaped snaring elements (54) and angularly disposed severing elements (55), and to ensure that the yarn is caught and severed in said groove at the commencement of a winding operation there is a pivoted frame 56 and bar 60 that are swung by pneumatic means 64 from a lower inoperative position (not shown) to an upper operative position, Fig. 3, so that a rod 110 carried by the frame 56 will cause the yarn 26 to be pressed against the second chuck 18 and thereafter further pneumatic means 58 is operated to move the bar 60 in the direction of traverse in a manner causing a hook 118, Fig. 6 (not shown) on the bar 60 to engage the yarn 26 and traverse it into a setting wherein it is in alignment with the groove (52) Fig. 2, in chuck 18 so that the yarn will be caught up therein. Thereafter the bar 60 traverses back to its original setting and the frame 56 swings downwardly to its inoperative setting. Doffing A timing device determines when the tube on the chuck 18 is full, and links supporting the chuck 18 are then operated to move the package away from the drive roll 22 and deposit the chuck ends on end supports (36); Fig. 1 (not shown) the package having sufficient rotational intertia to continue winding. Further links swing the other chuck (20), with an empty tube thereon, into engagement with the drive roll 22 and the yarn is then taken up by the chuck (20) and tube thereon in the manner described above. As the yarn commences to wind onto the empty tube brake shoes (40), Fig. 1 (not shown), rise to stop the rotation of the completed package. Traverse This is by means of a reciprocating guide 24, Fig. 1 (not shown). Transfer tail The groove (52) lies outside the traverse range of the guide (24). When the yarn has been snared and severed in the groove (52) of the chuck, the yarn passes under a tooth (76), Figs. 4 and 7 (not shown) pivotally mounted on bar 60 and which holds the yarn at the setting of the tooth until there is sufficient tension in the yarn to pivot the latch against the bias of a magnet (82) and so release the yarn to the traversing device (24). As the yarn moves from the latch to the traversing device a transfer tail is formed on the tube on which the package is being wound.
