Abstract

751,363. Winding yarn. UNIVERSAL WINDING CO. Jan. 8, 1954 [Jan. 15, 1953], No. 637/54. Class 120 (2). A yarn-winding machine comprises a rotatable spindle, core-holding means thereon, a member engageable by a core placed on the holding means while the spindle is rotating to actuate gripping means on the holder to secure the core while a package is being wound, a yarn traversing guide, a yarn cutter for holding the advancing yarn strand in position to be pinched between the core and the member so that the yarn strand is attached to the core at substantially the same time that the core is secured to its holder, and means for disposing of the advancing yarn strand prior to its attachment to the core. In threading up the machine, the strand Y is led over a guide roller 32, around the roller 30 on a pivotallymounted, weighted arm 24 which moves a rock-shaft 28, under yarn tension variations to brake or otherwise the winding spindle 20 to maintain a constant winding tension, thence through a retaining eye 138, over a hook 122, through cutting mechanism 104, over a guiding wheel 106 and finally into an aspirator nozzle 40. The yarn extending between the hook 122 and the cutter 104 is positioned near the flange 92 of the package core holder (Fig. 3). The starting lever 76 is then swung anti-clockwise and so unlocks the core-engaging fingers 60 from their retracted position held therein by a sleeve 80 which engaged notches 90 in the fingers. The spindle 20 begins to move and a core 18 is doured, the yarn Y being gripped beneath its base and the flange 92. At the same time, the fingers 60, released by the sleeve 80 and moved by a spring-pressed cam member 64 against the force of a circumferential spring 62 moves into contact with the core 18. As the yarn is tensioned by the contra-rotation of the core, a knife blade 136 in the cutter mechanism 104 nips the yarn against the anvil 134 to sever it, the severed length being drawn away through the aspirator nozzle 40. The yarn, supported and guided by the hook 122 now winds upon the core 18 in a transfer tail and when sufficient has been wound, the operator moves the handle 114 to retract the hook 122 to cause the yarn to drop from the eye 138 into the traverse guide 14 for the main wind to begin. When the package is completed, the traverse frame 16 is swung back and the yarn extending between the guide 14 and the package is drawn across a blade 47 on the aspirator 40 of the running strand still being supplied is drawn away. The spindle 20 is then stopped and the package is doffed. Specification 697,303 is referred to.
