Abstract

734,042. Winding bobbins. GUTERMANN, R. C. Jan. 29, 1953 [Feb. 18, 1952], No. 2590/53. Classes 120(2) and 120(3). A method of securing the starting thread end to the final end in the automatic production of wound bobbins, is characterised in that an empty bobbin tube is fitted with about half its length over a winding spindle, then, by means of a cutting member, a tongue is cut from the middle portion of the tube and is pressed outwards, the starting thread end is then guided under said tongue and the tongue then pressed down to clamp the thread, the bobbin is then wound in known manner, a tongue is then cut from one end of the tube by the same cutting member and bent outwards, the thread end is guided under the second tongue which is bent down on to the thread to clamp the same, and, finally, the thread end is severed. As shown, the cardboard tube 9, held on an expansible mandril 1d, 7 is furnished at about its mid-length with a projecting flap 2 cut from its periphery by a cutter 19 mounted within the tube 9 and raised by a control shaft 23, the cutter 19 cooperating with members 20 to form a U-shaped cut, the flap 2 being bent upwardly from the tube. A similar further cut 2a is furnished near the outer end of the tube 9 after the bobbin has been wound. The end of the thread being wound and extending between the traverse guide 13 and nippers 17, is now moved under the flap 2 by a transverse and axial movement of the nippers 17 and a pressing member 16 presses the flap 2 down to hold the thread end, the free portion of which is, at the same time released by the nippers 17. The winding of the package of yarn is then begun, the traverse guide 13 being returned to the inner end of the mandril for that purpose. After completion of the package, a thread clip 14 now loosely grips the final end of the thread and moves it across the tube 9 and longitudinally thereof, positioning it beneath the flap 2a which is then pressed down to hold the final thread end by a presser 15. At the same time the thread is severed by the blades of a cutter 18 and gripped again by the nippers 17 in preparation for being placed under the flap 2 of a fresh bobbin tube prior to a new wind. The nippers 17, Fig. 10, comprise fixed and movable spring-biassed jaws 50, 53, the latter being rocked about a pin 51 by a control shaft 49 and when the jaw 53 is opened an abutment 65 bears upon the spring-urged pressing member 16 for the pressing of the flap 2. The clip 14, Fig. 5, comprises fixed and movable jaws 27, 26 movable together about a shaft 29, the movable jaw 26, spring-biassed at 39, being controlled by a shaft 38 and a slide 32. The shears 18, Fig. 9, comprise fixed and movable spring-biassed cutters 44, 46 operated from the control shaft 49, the closing of the cutters effecting the lowering of the presser 15 through a lever 57 and pin 59.
