Abstract

859,877. Winding wire; bobbins. WINGET Ltd. May 3, 1957 [May 4, 1956], No. 13894/56. Classes 120(2) and 120(3). Wire coiling apparatus comprises rotary main and auxiliary bobbins, on the latter of which an initial length of waste wire is wound; the wire is supplied to the main bobbin and thence to the auxiliary bobbin along paths such that when the portion of wire being supplied to the main bobbin is moved lengthwise thereof it traps the portion passing to the auxiliary bobbin; and means is provided for severing the wire passing between the bobbins so that a length of wire following the initial length wound on the auxiliary bobbin can be wound on the main bobbin. In one embodiment, Fig 1, one 'end of wire W from an annealing machine is passed over a traverse guide pulley 5, around a main bobbin 2 and engaged in a hole 4a of an auxiliary bobbin 4. When the motor of the annealing machine is started, shaft 1 carrying bobbin 2 is also driven and in its turn drives, through a belt 31 and a magnetic clutch 32, a shaft 3 carrying bobbin 4. Guide pulley 5 is normally traversed by a cam 17 but is initially held in the position shown by a catch 11. Heating current is not applied to the annealing machine until it has reached full speed; in the meantime the unannealed wire is wound up on bobbin 4. Shortly after annealing current is switched on, a solenoid S is energized to release catch 11 and permit guide 5 to traverse; solenoid S is not energized, however, until a soft iron rod 22, reciprocated by cam 17, has entered a reactance coil I and cam 17 is properly positioned. As guide 5 moves to the left, the wire portion W2 is trapped beneath the portion W1 and simultaneously the wire between the two bobbins is severed by a knife 33 or by fusing, subsequent winding taking place helically on bobbin 2. Clutch 32 is then de-energized so that bobbin 4 can be removed and the waste wire stripped. In another embodiment, the auxiliary bobbin is mounted coaxially with the main bobbin or is formed integrally therewith, the wire extending between the two bobbins over a guide pulley; this portion of wire breaks under increase of tension when winding is commenced on the main bobbin as in the Fig. 1 embodiment. The coaxial auxiliary bobbin 64, Fig. 7, may be formed with a tapered surface 66, 67, 68; winding commences at the surface portion 65, the completed turns being forced gradually to the left to form a coil C which is loose on the reduced diameter portion of the bobbin and is retained there by a removable cover 69. This form of bobbin 64 may be used with the Fig. 1 embodiment. A third bobbin 73, Fig. 8, may be provided to receive a waste tail portion of wire produced when the annealing machine is decelerating. When the annealing machine stop switch is operated it prepares a circuit whereby the machine is stopped when the traverse guide 75 next engages a limit switch 79; simultaneously, a rod 76 moves to the right so that a hook 77 carries the wire W on to bobbin 73 whereon the waste tail portion is wound. This waste is subsequently severed from the coil L on the main bobbin 72, and discarded.
