Abstract

913,220. Winding yarn packages. OWENSCORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. Oct. 20, 1959 [Nov. 3, 1958], No. 35584/59. Classes 120 (2) and 120 (3). A package of filaments of mineral or resinous material is formed by first winding on a minor area of a sleeve a narrow band of filaments of a width equal to the amplitude of oscillation of the filaments and in which the filaments cross each, followed by laying down the main layers of filaments with convolutions of filaments in crossing relation throughout the layers. The narrow band is intended to provide a visual signal indicating the approach of the end of the filaments when unwinding. The signal band 24, Fig. 2, may be disposed on any part of the sleeve 10 and is formed by allowing the filaments to be guided on to the sleeve by a traverse means 110, Fig. 5, which, during the formation of this initial layer, is not reciprocated. A motor 114 rotates the traverse means 110 and is arranged to cause its reciprocation through mechanism driven by a belt when an idler pulley tensions the belt under the influence of a solenoid 188. Upon completion of the winding of a package, a treadle 96 is depressed to apply brake shoes to a drum mounted on the packagecarrying shaft and to stop the motor 70 that drives the package. Release of the treadle 96 permits winding to begin again, but time delay apparatus, by holding the idler pulley away from its belt, defers the start of reciprocation of the traverse means 110.
