Abstract

977,048. Winding yarns. OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. April 4, 1963 [April 4, 1962], No. 13471/63. Headings DID and D1J. [Also in Division H2] In the winding of a strand on a rotatable collector to form a wound package the strand is held initially by a first guide member adjacent a non-packaging surface of the collector and is wound thereon until the collector reaches its normal speed, is then released from the first guide member and engaged by a traversing thread guide to be distributed over the length of the main packaging surface of the collector. The invention has particular application to the winding of multifilament glass strand since the strand wound in the initial period of acceleration of the packaging surface is not properly attenuated and is, therefore, waste. A multifilament glass strand 28 which is to be wound on a sleeve 26 mounted on a rotatable collet 24 is held initially and for a predetermined period in the position shown by a pin 94 which projects transversely from the end of a rotatable and reciprocable shaft 30. The strand is, therefore, wound on an end portion 24<SP>1</SP> of the collet or alternatively on an end portion of the sleeve 26 while the collet 24 accelerates to its normal speed at which time rotation of the shaft 30 commences, releasing the strand from the pin 94 and causing it to engage with a traversing thread guide 34. In addition to the relatively rapid crossing of the strand convolutions caused by the rotary movement of thread guide 34 the strand is distributed over the length of the sleeve 26 by reciprocatory movement of the shaft 30 under the action of a grooved cam 44. When winding of the package is completed operation of a foot pedal 88 disconnects the drive by slackening the belt 21 and applies a braking action to the collet 24 but (by means of suitable electrical contacts) the reciprocal movement of the shaft is arranged to continue till the shaft 30 reaches the fully extended position shown, i.e. with the thread guide 34 at the end of the sleeve 26 adjacent the non packaging surface. Manual rotation of the shaft 30 may be required to ensure that the pin 94 is in the horizontal position required to guide the strand initially. Motors M 1 , M 2 , M 3 serve respectively to rotate the collet, to rotate the shaft 30 and to reciprocate the shaft 30, and suitable electrical contacts serve to energize motors M 2 and M 3 after predetermined periods from the energizing of motor M 1 .
