Abstract

A method of winding a yarn into a cylindrical-bodied cheese comprises winding the yarn onto a bobbin that revolves at a gradually reducing rotational speed and traversing the yarn thereon at a rate that varies in such a manner that it attains its maximum rate of traverse at a time after 15% and before 75% by weight of the yarn in the final package. Preferably the rate of traverse is gradually increased to its maximum and is thereafter gradually decreased. Alternatively the rate of traverse, having reached its maximum, is maintained at its maximum until the end of the winding. The traverse may be driven by motor having its speed varied according to the desired programme. A "ribbon breaking" motion may also be carried out by the traverse.
