Abstract

1,242,223. Winding processes. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 13 Nov., 1968 [17 Nov., 1967], No. 52486/67. Heading D1F. [Also in Division B8] Freshly drawn, single or multifialment, continuous strand or yarn of polyamide is wound, in parallel layers with a long to short build, to form a package, at different balloon (windon) tensions, caused by changes in spindle speed, so as to counteract the forces which develop in the package subsequent to building. In an example, the spindle speed is programmed to give balloon tension starting at one gram, increasing to eight grams at one third of the full package, and then decreasing to one gram again at the full package, the corresponding spindle speeds being 8,500 r.p.m. increasing continuously to 9,200 r.p.m., then decreasing continuously to 5,700 r.p.m. On subsequent unwinding, the shrinkage tension (the tension which occurs when the yarn is held to constant length and heated to a temperature of 190Œ 5‹C) varies about a mean by not more than 5%, with consequent reduction in dyeing differences in bulked yarn fabrics made from the unwound yarn.
