Abstract
1,202,205. Package. JAMES MACKIE & SONS Ltd. 6 Sept., 1967 [8 Sept., 1966], No. 40223/66. Heading B8M. [Also in Division D1] A package 15 of synthetic plastics tape drawn from a controlled speed supply source is wound on a non-rotary support 34 by a winding guide 47 (e.g. on a flyer 12) driven round the axis of the support so as to insert one turn of thrust for each revolution of the guide. Thus when the tape is drawn off over-end e.g. in a loom, the drawn-off tape is twistless. As shown spindle 14 carrying the flyer is driven from a pulley 26 which transmits drive to a clutch plate 29 on the spindle through friction pads 28. Pads 28 are radially movable so that as the package grows the torque applied to the spindle is lessened and the tension in the tape is kept constant. Other types of slipping drive may be used. The tape passes to the flyer over a pulley 45 close to the top shoulder 46 of the flyer; thus each twist inserted in the tape is localized. The flyer is provided with a selfthreading guide roller 47 and a co-operating pivoted wire arm which lays the tape on the package. The packags build is derived from the reciprocation of a rail 20 and associated shaft 40, the reciprocation being transmitted by a bar 38. To obtain shaped package ends shaft 40 is intermittently rotated so that a gear thereon engaging a rack on bar 38 shifts bar 38.
