Abstract

1,188,580. Textile drafting arrangement. MAREMONT CORP. 8 Aug., 1967 [9 Aug., 1966], No. 36432/67. Heading D1D. Apparatus for applying tension to a strand comprises forwarding rollers 12, 14 to which the strand passes from a rotatable member 80 mounted on a shaft which can retard the rotatable member via a one way clutch. As shown a stretch yarn from a package 32 is fed between the final drafting rollers 12, 14 of a head, drafting rovings from packages 18, so as to be twisted into the final yarn. In its passage to rollers 12, 14 the yarn is passed about a pulley 80 which has a zig-zag groove therein to prevent the yarn slipping. The pulley is mounted on a shaft which is driven from the drive shaft of roller 14 at a selectable fraction of the speed of roller 14. The one way clutch between pulley 80 and its driven shaft is such that pulley 80 cannot be rotated at a greater speed than the shaft by the pull in the yarn but can rotate at a slower speed than the shaft. Thus in normal operation the pulley is rotated at a constant speed such that draft is applied between the pulley and rollers 12, 14 but on breakage of the yarn between the pulley and rollers 12, 14 the pulley stops under the influence of a device which applies a small adjustable drag on the pulley while its shaft and any other pulleys 70 on the same shaft continue to rotate. The pulleys 70, 80 are preferably mounted on stub shafts as shown to facilitate threading up but they may be mounted on a continuous shaft running the length of the machine.
