This invention relates to flier frames for use in the preparation of textile rovings and more particularly to frames having mechanically driven bobbins onto which the rovings emerg- 5 ing from the front rollers are wound.
In mechanisms of this kind as known and used hitherto, great care hasI been taken to ensure that the winding speed of the bobbins is always exactly equal to the speed at which the rovings l emerge from the front drafting rollers in order that the rovings may be evenly Wound onto the bobbins. The winding speed of a bobbin is the circumferential speed of the surface of the bobbin or of the layer of roving wound thereon, onto which the roving is being wound.
Since any irregularities in the roving tend to re-appear in the final yarn, it is extremely important that the final rovings on the bobbins should be as regular as' possible and it is the 2O chief object of the invention to provide mechanism by means of which rovings having a very high degree of regularity can be produced. With this object in view the front drafting roller or rollers is/are, according to the invention, caused 25 to rotate with a surface speed which is substantially less than the winding speed of the bobbins. 'Thus the winding speed of the bobbins is greater than the speed at which the rovings emerge from the front drafting rollers with the result 30 that the rovings are submitted to a drafting operation between these rollers and the bobbins.
This offers the great advantage that for a given output the front drafting rollers can be driven at a lower speed. It is known that the 35 irregularities introduced into a roving during drafting, increase rapidly both with an increase in the speed of drafting and with an increase in the magnitude of the draft.
A reduction in the speed of the front rollers 40 reduces both the speed of drafting and the magnitude of draft and thus results in the production of a roving of greatly improved regularity, which regularity is not impaired by the final drafting operation between the front rollers and the bob- 45 bins. In general the mechanism according to the invention will be arranged to produce a draft of from 1.5 to 3 between the bobbins and the front rollers but an even greater draft may be obtained if desired.
50 Since the effective diameter of the bobbins increases as each succeeding layer of roving isI wound on, it is necessary for the speed of rotation of the bobbins to be reduced as the winding proceeds if a constant winding speed is to be 55 maintained. For this purpose a pair of cone pulleys are generally used. In a common arrangement an upper cone shaft carrying a cone pulley is positively driven from a suitable source of power and is positively geared to the front drafting rollers and to the flier spindles. The 5 bobbins are driven from the power source through the intermediary of a differential gear which is connected with a second pulley. The cone pulleys are connected together by means of a suitable belt and the arrangement is such that while the front rollers and fliers are driven at a constant speed, the speed of the bobbins is reduced as the winding proceeds so that the winding speed always remains as accurately as possible equal to the surface speed of the front rollers. `1,5
For the purpose of the present invention similar apparatus can be used except that the gear ratio between the upper cone shaft and the front rollers is suitably modified in order that the winding speed of the bobbins is greater than the surface speed of the front rollers in proportion to the draft desired. Preferably the drive between the top cone shaft and the rollers is effected by means of changeable gear wheels so that the speed ratio and consequently the draft produced by the bobbins can be adjusted as desired.
The drafting effected by the bobbins from the front rollers is carried out at the same time as the roving is being twisted. This is highly advantageous because the twist always accumulates at the thinner parts of the roving causing the fibres to grip together more firmly at these places thus leaving the thicker places proportionately untwisted and soft. The result is that the thicker places yield to a greater extent to the 85 drafting operation and the rovings are thus automatically evened out. This regularising effect is all the more advantageous since it is effected after the usual drafting operation and there is no subsequent operation liable to cause irregularities in the rovings.
The amount of twist which is normally put into the rovings'for their satisfactory winding o'n and unwinding from the bobbins may be greater than is desirable from the drafting point of view since an excessive twist reduces the regularising effect. In order to obtain the optimum amount of twist both for the drafting and for the winding operations, twist controlling devices may, according to a further feature of the inven- "tion, be incorporated between the fliers and the vfront rollers.
The object of these devices is to keep the upper sections of the rovings nearest to the front rollers twisted to the most suitable extent for drafting while the lower sections are 5E given the normal flier twist suitable for the winding operation.
The twist controlling devices may be of any suitable form and may rotate in the same direction as the fliers or in the opposite direction depending on the relative twists required in the two sections of the rovings. Means may also be provided for enabling the speed of the false twist mechanisms to be varied as required.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect the same will now be more fully described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein like references denote like parts and wherein:
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic illustration of the transmission of motion between the various parts of a flier frame and including the improvement according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic elevation, partly broken away, of a false twist device mounted between the flier and the drafting rollers.
Figure 3 is a diagrammatic side elevation of a twist controlling device.
Figure 4 is a diagrammatic front elevation according to Figure 3, and,
Figure 5 is a diagrammatic side elevation of a modified twist controlling device.
Referring in particular to Figure 1 of the drawings wherein parts are included which are irrelevant to the invention for the purpose of an easier understanding of the invention, a pair of cone pulleys I, 2 are provided for reducing the speed of the bobbins 3 (one of which is shown) as the winding thereof proceeds and for the purpose set out in the opening paragraphs of the specification. The two pulleys I, 2 are connected together by means of a belt 4, the adjustment of which is controlled by the member 5, and the upper cone shaft 5, carrying the cone pulley I, is positively driven through gears from a suitable source of power 8 and is connected through the train of gears 9 to the front drafting rollers Ill. The source of power 8 is connected to the iiier spindles II through the gears I2. The bobbins 3 are driven from the power source 8 through the intermediary of a differential I3 which is connected through gears I4 with the spindle I5 of the second cone pulley 2.
The gearing 9 between the shaft 6 and the rollers I0 constitutes the main improvement according to the invention, this gearing preferably including changeable gear wheels and being so arranged that the surface speed of the rollers Ill is less than the winding speed of the bobbins 3 in proportion to the draft desired.
The twist controlling devices may, according to Figure 2, be in the form of false twist devices IB, (one of which is shown), mounted between the flier I5 and the front rollers Ill. The speed of the device I6 is such that the amount of twist on the roving I1 between the device I6 and the rollers I0 is just right for the satisfactory drafing over this zone. The twist on the roving after it has passed through the device I6 and up to the bobbin 3 is the standard twist given by the flier I5, and the amount of this is decided upon and obtained in known manner.
According to Figures 3 and 4 the rovings I'I may each be passed between a pair of rotating rollers I8 one or both of which may be formed with one or more ats or recesses I9 so that the roving is alternately gripped and released according to the frequency and duration of the opening or openings I9. Thus whilst the roving is gripped the twist given by the flier I5 runs up to the grip of the rollers I8 but cannot pass beyond it. The grip on the roving is temporarily released, however, while a flat or recess is over the line of contact between the rollers and when this happens some of the twist runs through the gap I9 to the upper section of the roving I'I.
A further means of modifying the amount of twist reaching the upper sections of the rovings is illustrated in Figure 5 and this means comprises two rods 29 through which the roving passes. The rods are mounted between the fliers I5 (not shown in this figure) and the drafting rollers I0 and they can be more or less closed or inclined so as to vary the friction of the roving I'I against them, thus varying the degree of obstruction to the transmission of the twist from the filer upwards along the roving. If desired the rods 29 could be in the form of plates or of any other suitable shape.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:`
1. In a flier frame for use in the preparation of textile rovings, the combination of bobbins, fliers associated with said bobbins, rollers for drafting said rovings, and means for driving said bobbins, said iiiers and said rollers, including means for continually reducing the speed of said bobbins as said rovings are wound thereon to maintain a constant winding speed for said bobbins and means for reducing the speed of said rollers so that the surface speed thereof is less than the winding speed of said bobbins.
2. In a flier frame for use in the preparation of textile rovings, the combinati-.on of bobbins. fliers associated with said bobbins, drafting rollers, and driving means connected to speed reducing means, said bobbins being driven through said speed reducing means and differential mechanism, and said fliers and said rollers being driven directly by said driving means, adjustable means being provided for reducing the surface speed of said rollers to less than the winding speed of said bobbins.
3. In a flier frame for use in the preparation of textile rovings, the combination of a set of drafting rollers, a bobbin upon which said roving coming from said drafting rollers is wound, a flier associated with said bobbin, a pair of speed reducing cone pulleys mounted on shafts, a belt cooperating with said pulleys, means for controlling the position of said belt, driving means connected to one of said shafts, said latter shaft being connected through changeable gear wheels to the shaft of the front drafting roller and also transmitting the drive through the conepulley system and a diiferential mechanism to said bobbin, and a train of gear wheels connecting said driving means to the spindle of said flier, said changeable gear wheels being so arranged that the surface speed of said front drafting roller is less than the winding speed of said bobbin.
4:. In a ier frame for use in the preparation of textile rovings, the combination of a set of drafting rollers, bobbins upon which the roving coming from said rollers is wound, fliers associated with said bobbins, and driving means connected to said bobbins, said fliers and the front roller of said set of drafting rollers, means being provided for maintaining a constant winding speed for said bobbins and also means for reducing the surface speed of said front roller to less than the winding speed of said bobbins, said latter means permitting the adjustment of the speed of said roller at any time and independently of the winding speed of said bobbins.
5. In a flier frame for use in the preparation of textile rovings, the combination of drafting rollers, bobbins for receiving the roving, fliers associated with said bobbins, driving means connected to said bobbins, said fliers and the front rollers of said drafting rollers, means being profvided for maintaining a constant winding speed for said bobbins as the amount of roving thereon increases and also means for reducing the surface speed of said front rollers to less than the winding speed of said bobbins, said latter means permitting the adjustment of the speed of said rollers at any time and independently of the winding speed of said bobbins and a false twist mechanism incorporated between each flier and said front rollers.
6. In a ier frame for use in the preparation of textile rovings, the combination of drafting rollers, bobbins for receiving the roving emerging from said drafting rollers, fliers associated with said bobbins for imparting a twist to the rovings between said bobbins and the front rollers of said rollers, driving means connected to said bobbins, said fliers and said front rollers, means being provided for maintaining a constant winding speed for said bobbins as the amount of roving thereon increases and also means for reducing the surface speed of said front rollers to less than the winding speed of said bobbins and a device, incorporated between each flier and said front drafting rollers, said device partially obstructing the passage of the twist along the rovings from said flier towards said drafting rollers.
'7. In a flier frame for use in the preparation of textile rovings, the combination of drafting rollers, bobbins for receiving the roving emerging from said drafting rollers, fliers associated with said bobbins for imparting a twist to the rovings between said bobbins and the front rollers of said rollers, driving means connected to said bobbins, said fliers and said front rollers, means being provided for maintaining a constant winding speed for said bobbins as the amount of roving thereon increases and also means for reducing the surface speed of said front rollers to less than the winding speed of said bobbins and a pair of rollers, at least one of which is formed with at least one recess incorporated between each ier and said front drafting rollers, for obstructing the passage of the twist along the rovings from said flier towards said drafting rollers.
8. In a flier frame for use in the preparation of textile rovings, the combination of drafting rollers, bobbins for receiving the roving emerging from said drafting rollers, fliers associated with said bobbins for imparting a twist to the rovings between said bobbins and the front rollers of said rollers, driving means connected to said bobbins, said fliers and said front rollers, means being provided for maintaining a constant Winding .speed for said bobbins as the amount of roving thereon increases and also means for reducing the surface speed of said front rollers to less than the winding speed of said bobbins and twist controlling devices consisting of members mounted to engage the roving between the fliers and drafting rollers.
