Lzuna 'd ams'cy Patented Aug. 31, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEONARD HEMSLEY, OF STOCKIPORT, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN HETHERINGTON AND SONS LIMITED, OF MANCHESTER, ENGLAND.
SPINNING OF COTTON, WOOL, SILK, OR LIKE TEXTILE FIBERS.
Application filed October 22, 1925, Serial No. 64,078, and in Great Britain November 21, 1924.
This invention relates to the spinning of cotton, wool, silk or like textile fibers and roving in a single drafting operation thus.
obviating the need for several separate draftin operations which has hitherto been usual. itherto it has been common to effect the drawing in several successive machines the sliver or yarn being passed betw en sets of three rollers, in each machine rotating at different speeds, the drawn sliver or yarn being twisted and drawn till the desired at; 1 tenuation is effected. It has also been proposed to use two sets of rollers between which is a rotary member through which the sliver passes on its way from one set of rollers to the other wherein it is given a false twist previous to a further draft 1n the second set of rollers.
Accordin to this invention in a machine of the kind referred to, and having two sets of drawing rollers, and a false twist mechanism between them, I provide a flyer or fiyers adapted to rotate approximately in line with the path of the sliver, each having an eye radially distant from the axis of the fiyer, through 'which the sliver is passed in passing from one set of rollers to the other, by which eye the sliver 1s given a false twist before passing to the second set of drawing rollers.
The invention is more particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein Figure l is a diagrammatical plan showing the application to a roving frame.
Figure 2 is a front view illustrating the twisting mechanism and a means for driving it.
Referring to the drawings the sliver 4 is passed through the usual three drawing rollers 5 where it is attenuated in the usual manner such attenuation being carried as far as is safe without breaking. In front of the usual drawing rollers 5 is a frame 13 having horizontally and rotatably mounted therein a plurality of tubes 6 having double groove pulleys 7 thereon around which an endless band 8 is passed arranged in such a manner as to drive the pulleys, which band is also carried round a driver 9 rotated by convenient means such as a chain 14 from the preceding box, and passing the movement on to the next box by another similar chain, by which arrangement all the pulleys and tubes are rotated at one sp'eed. Conveniently the tubes 6 and pulleys 7 are arranged in pairs one being for each spindle, those of each pair corresponding with the adjacent back and front spindles. Secured in the face of each pulley 7 is a short pin 11 having an eye 12- the whole forming a flyer-and the sliver from the drawing rollers 5 is carried through the tubes 6 and after being given one turn round the pin 11 is carried through the eye 12 and thence, after being given a twist owing to the rotation of the fiyer eye, between a second set of drawing rollers 15 where, owing to the twist given to it, it may safely be further attenuated to such a degree that after it has received the usual twist of the bobbin fiyer it is wrapped on the bobbins as an even and finished yarn.
The operation of twisting the partly attenuated sliver by the rotation of the fiyer gives a slight additional draft and this assisted by a mechanical draft exerted between the last roller before the twisting operation and the first roller after the oper ation draws out any thick places in the yarn between the fiyer and the preceding roller and evens up the yarn in preparation for the final drafting.
By means of this invention a much higher draft can be given than has hitherto been possible in a single machine, and a better yarn is obtained than has hitherto been produced by the known methods.
It is to be understood that the synchronization of the rotation of the various rotating parts may be obtained in any convement manner.
If desired the tubes of the flyers may be fixed in the frame the pulleys and the eyes thus forming the flyers carried thereon being suitably mounted and rotated,
hat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a machine of the character described and having two sets of drawing rollers and a false twist mechanism between them, a fiyer mounted for rotation only around its own axis approximately in line with the path of the sliver, and an eye forming member carried by said. fi er and disposed in offset position relative y to the center of the axis of rotation of the flyer, the 5 eye being at right angles to said axis, whereby a sliver passin r from one set of rollers to the other and t readed through said eye In testimony whereof I have -signed my name to this specification.
LEONARD HEMSLEY.
