Abstract

and D1W. In a method of making fancy e.g. looped, undulated or knapped, yarn, core and effect threads are combined by false-twisting with the effect thread overfed e.g. 10-300%, relative to the core and then, before the disappearance of the false-twist, the assembly is bound (optionally, also by false-twisting) with a binding thread applied, optionally with overfeed, at the instant of locking or arresting the false-twist i.e. at the point in the yarn from which twist runs forwards and backwards in opposite direction. The rate of overfeed of the effect thread may be continuously or intermittently variable. The effect thread may be distributed irregularly over the core thread as a result of its oscillation in a direction parallel to the core as it is fed in a direction normal to the direction of advance of the core thread. As shown in Fig. 1, core thread 1 is fed, simultaneously with effect thread 2, into a false-twist device comprising a hollow spindle 3 having a driving whorl 4 surmounted by an uptwister flyer 5 freely rotatable on the spindle head and carrying an eyelet 6 through which binding thread 7, supplied from a bobbin 8 rotating with the spindle, passes with the threads 1, 2, to take-up. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) the effect thread 2 is fed by driven nip rollers (10, 11) normally to the direction of advance of the core thread 1 and is oscillated by a finger (12): the rolls may be rotated at continuously variable speed which may at intervals be abruptly reduced to zero. Irregular and intermittent overfeed may be controlled by a programmer (25) Fig. 3 (not shown) which selects which of two different speed drives is transmitted via a clutch plate (17 or 18) to a counter-plate (16) carried on a spindle mounting driven rolls (14, 15) for advancing an effect thread to the running core thread on the entry side of a falsetwist spindle. A fixed ring carrying a traveller or a double-twist spindle as described in British Specification No. 921205 may be used to combine the threads. As shown in Fig. 4, core thread 1 is withdrawn under high tension from a bobbin 34 and, as it travels through an effect thread 2 which is overfed by controlled rollers 37, 38. The thread assembly travels on to a bar 40 secured to a rotating plate 39 and is associated with a binding thread 7 in a false-twisting device constituted by a hollow tube 41 carrying a thread deflector 42 and guides 43, 44. Binding thread 7 is withdrawn from a bobbin 45 mounted on a fixed bobbin carrier 46 immobilised by magnets 47, 48, and having an axial conduit 49 serving for the passage of thread 7. The composite yarn leaves through the hollow spindle 50 of the tube 41 and is wound on a bobbin 51.
