Abstract

788,944. Twisting and finishing yarns and filaments. KLINGER MANUFACTURING CO.. Ltd., GILCHRIST R. S.. and MATTINGLY, D. A. E. Jan. 26, 1956 [Jan. 31, 1955; Nov. 22, 19551, Nos. 2885/55 and 33499/55. Classes 120(2) and 120(3) Multifilamentary yarn or monofilaments of synthetic organic material e.g. polyamides, polyesters, polyvinyl chloride, are given stretch/bulk properties by subjecting the yarn having little or no twist (or an untwisted assembly of the filaments) to two or more successive and superimposed false twisting processes i.e. passing through a spinning head disposed between two guides which restrain the yarn from twisting thereat so that the yarn in passing from one guide to the spinning head is twisted while plastic and then set and in passing from the head to. the other guide is untwisted to the same extent, the successive false-twists being applied in opposite directions. As shown in Fig. 1, a nylon yarn is led from a package 10, through a tensioning device 11, around a feed roller 12, over an oil-heated tongue 13 whereon it is subjected to a gradually increasing temperature, through a spinning head 18, around a take-off roller 19, thence to a spool 20 on which it is wound by a drum 22: the spool 20 then replaces the package 10, the rotation of the head 18 is reversed, and the process is repeated but with diminished severity of false-twist and temperature applied by the tongue 13. The apparatus is driven from a motor 40 which rotates a shaft 39 driving the head 18 (through belt 35 and pulleys 34, 36) and a variable speed and reversing box 25 which drives a shaft 23 of the drum 22 and the rollers 12 and 19 (through chains and sprocket wheels). As shown in Fig. 2, the false-twisted yarn passes directly from roller 19 to a duplicate apparatus operating at reduced speeds and comprising a heating tongue 113, spinning head 118 and take-off roller 119, and is spooled at 20. The motor 40 drives the head 118 through a variable speed and reversing gear box 41 and the box 25 through gearing 8, and the drives for all the rollers 119, 19, 12 are derived from the shaft 23 via chains and sprocket wheels. In crimping monofilaments, Fig. 3 (not shown), a number of filaments are assembled in untwisted form, then passed through the apparatus of Fig. 1 or Fig. 2 as a single yarn, and thereafter separated: individual filaments, Fig. 5 (not shown) have a "double wavy" formation comprising shorter waves superimposed on longer waves. Specification 788,526 is referred to.
