Abstract
1,225,476. Winding machines; measuring apparatus. OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORP. 6 May, 1969 [22 May, 1968], No. 22990/69. Headings D1F and D1J. Filamentary material, especially strands or bundles of glass fibre 122c, is fed to a winding machine 45 by a driven roller 240 which advances the strand whilst tension is maintained therein, but ceases to do so upon loss of tension. The surface of the roller 240 is of polyurethane or other resinous material. If tension is lost, the strand slips on the roller surface, and an arm 76" drops operating a micro-switch 98" to stop the winding motor. A plurality of winding machines 45 may be fed by one roller, or by individual rollers having a common drive (Figs. 3 to 6, not shown). In either case loss of tension in one strand interrupts only the corresponding winding head. A projection on the roller spindle, passing through an electromagnetic field produces pulses to operate counters on each winder to indicate the length of yarn wound. Operation of micro-switch 98" also breaks the corresponding counter circuit, so that pulses are not counted while the strand is slipping over the roller 240. The length of contact between the strand 122c and its roller 240 may be adjusted by movement of idler rollers 230, 232. The strand may be impregnated or coated with an elastomer and passed through a drying oven 144" before advancing to the feed roller 240.
