[Also in Group IX] String or twine is formed by continuously slitting a travelling web of paper into strips, separating, moistening and twisting the strips while maintaining them in integral connection with the web, drying and winding. In the apparatus shown, a roll of paper 4 is unwound and threaded through a guide roller 5 and the web is fed between coacting sets of adjustably overlapping rotary knives or discs (8 only shown) to be formed thereby into strips, as at 37, which are separated by spacing pegs 39 on a spreader member 38 and guided through porcelain eyes 41, over freely rotatable moistening rollers 42 dipping into liquid in a trough 40 so that the strips are rendered pliable, between pairs of friction advancing rollers 32, through twisting heads 43 which impart twist running back to the nip of rollers 32, and are finally wound into bobbins on spindles 51 or cones or spools (not shown). Drying heat may be directed, as by means of infra-red heaters 48 and 49, against the strips at the position 50 or on to the wound bobbins. Shafts 26, 33, 45, 52, which drive the knives, rollers 32, twisting- heads 43 and spindles 51, are themselves driven by a motor 31 from a common shaft 30 through bevel gears which ensure predetermined speed ratios therebetween. The string &c. product may be coated and/or impregnated with plastic materials including synthetic resins, rubber or synthetic rubber.
