Abstract

In a process for the manufacture of a web of material which is strengthened with an array of intersecting threads, a group of transverse threads is deposited by thread guides on a rotating thread laying device so that the transverse threads extend between two pin-carrying chains and are supported by the pins 17, Fig. 2, thereof, the chains running parallel to one another in a layer zone containing the thread guides, the group of transverse threads is continuously brought to an assembly position where it is assembled with a group of longitudinal threads 12, the assembly of transverse and longitudinal threads is guided between two webs of material and secured thereto, and the group of transverse threads is removed from the pins of the pin-carrying chains. The webs may be of plastics, paper, or fleece. In one embodiment of apparatus for carrying out the process, Fig. 4. threads 37 from spools 36 mounted on a turntable 35 are led to thread guide eyes 41 on adjustable arms 51 which rotate to wind the threads on to the pins of parallel pin-carrying chains 42, 43, so that the threads extend between the chains and transversely of their motion to pressure rollers 28, 29. Longitudinal threads 32, foil 21 and adhesive coated foil 22 are also fed to the pressure rolls to form a laminate after which the edges of the laminate are trimmed and it is wound on to a roll 49. The winding of the threads on to the pins of the chains is so arranged that each thread is looped about a single pin on one chain and several pins on the other depending upon the number of supply spools. In further embodiments of apparatus the arrangement of the pincarrying chains may be varied, and more than one spool-carrying turntable may be present. When it is desired to make the spacing of the transverse threads in the finished laminate different from the spacing of the threads when on the pin-carrying chains the pressure rollers, material webs, and longitudinal threads are moved more quickly or more slowly than the chains. In this case one of the pressure rollers may he provided at its ends with toothed wheels or rubber rings which maintain the threads in the required positions between the webs. In a further embodiment the transverse threads may be disposed obliquely and intersect each other.
