Abstract
944,996. Winding webs. M. GENNERICH, and A. WINDMOLLER, [trading as WINDMOLLER & HOLSCHER]. Feb. 3, 1961 [Feb. 18, 1960], No. 4110/61 Heading B6B. A method of winding a continuous web 2 into rolls which are driven peripherally includes winding a core by peripheral contact along a generator of the core which is offset contrary to the direction of its rotation from the generator at the bottom of the core and after the roll has reached a predetermined diameter winding at a second position in which the roll is driven by contact along a generator of the roll which is offset in the direction of rotation from the generator at the bottom of the roll. A winding core 48, Fig. 1, on a winding shaft 49 is driven by belt 42, 43 at the beginning of a winding operation. The shaft 49 is held between members 50, 51 and 52, 53. When a roll 11 reaches a predetermined size a limit switch 92 is actuated by blocks 13, 14, thereby causing actuation of levers 46, 47 by pistons 59, 60 which move to the Fig. 2 (not shown) position. The shaft 49 together with blocks 64, 65 drop on to a driven supporting roller 9, supported by pedestals 21, 22 while a knife 73 cuts the web 2. The core 48 previously coated with adhesive picks up the cut end and commences winding thereon. The completed roll 11 is removed from the machine after the drive to a driven supporting roller 10 has been stopped by actuation of an electromagnetic clutch (not shown) in the drive. The pedestals 21, 22, roller 9 and the roller 82 being wound are then moved into the position shown in Fig. 4 by rotation of lead screws 26, 27. Fig. 6 (not shown) engaging threaded bores 30, 31 in the pedestals to transfer the roll 82, Fig. 4, with blocks 64, 65 to frames 19, 20 such that the roll 82 is then wound by the roller 10. When the blocks 64, 65 completely engage guideways 17, 18 and the pedestals 21, 22 are returned to their starting position. The tension of web 2 may be controlled to control tightness of wound rolls by driving the rollers 9, 12 through friction clutches (not shown) which in non-slip engagement drive these rollers at a higher peripheral speed than a feed roller 6, Fig. 1. Alternatively, the clutches may be replaced by infinitely variable speed gearing. The knife 73 may be replaced by a heated rod or wire when winding synthetic thermoplastic material.
