4 Claims.
This invention relates to a parent roll drive applicable to any converting apparatus to provide web delivery at a predetermined lineal rate and from a predetermined point of delivery.
It is very common in machinery which delivers webs of paper or cloth or similar materials from a parent roll to effect delivery by means of feed rolls acting on the web and to apply some sort of a brake or drag to the parent roll which will act more or less continuously thereon. The parent roll is not ordinarily driven directly because to do so in any ordinary manner would involve a number of difficulties. For one thing,
the lineal rate of delivery would vary according to the radius of the roll and for another thing, any attempt to act on the periphery of the roll would involve a tendency of the web to wrinkle, even to the extent of forming a loop at the point of contact. The present invention seeks to over come the variation in radius by driving the periphery rather than the hub of the current roll and I have succeeded in overcoming the tendency to wrinkle by using a driving drum having a discontinuous peripheral surface.
These and other objects of the invention will appear more fully from the following disclosure thereof.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a view diagrammatically illustrated of apparatus embodying the invention as viewed in section on the line ll of Fig. 3.
Fig. 2 is a View taken in section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view taken in section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
While the invention is particularly described in connection with perforating apparatus for a toilet roll winder, it will be understood that this is merely by way of exemplification and that the invention has a wide range of utility wherever a Web is to be unwound from a parent roll.
The frame of the converting apparatus comprises a pair of spaced side members 5 and 6 having bearings for the knife-equipped perforating roll 1 and the coacting feed roll 8. The latter is mounted upon the power input shaft 9 which carries pulley l9 driven by belts H from motor 12. The pulley H1 may include a pneumatically operated brake I3 which may be expanded by air admitted into the annular elastic tube l 4 through pipe l5 subject to the control of an electromagnetic valve IB, this mechanism, however, forming no part of the present invention. The sheets may be counted and the apparatus controlled by an electrical switch ll (Fig. 1 and 2 Fig. 2) operated by cam l8 driven through a gear seat l9 actuated by chain 20 from the power input shaft 9.
The present invention is more particularly con cerned with the parent roll and the means for delivering web 26 therefrom. For the purposes of the present exemplification, the web passes between the perforating roll I and the feed roll 8 as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
The parent roll is provided at the ends of the core 21 with plugs 28, 29 which are annular, being mounted by means of roller bearings 39, 3! upon inner races 32, 33. These races have flanged heads provided with set screws 34, which fasten them to non-revoluble shaft 36. This shaft is guided in the inclined slots 31, 38 which are open at their upper ends and closed at their lower ends as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. These slots may conveniently be formed in winglike extensions 39, 40 of the frame elements 5 and 6, the extensions being bolted in place as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2.
The non-revoluble shaft 36 upon which the parent roll is mounted to turn may be adjusted to any desired axial position in order to shift the parent roll to one side of the machine frame or the other, so that the web will feed therefrom in the desired plane. For this purpose, the shaft 36 carries a flanged guide spool 42. Between the flanges of spool 42 is a bar 43 mounted on parallel links 44, 45 (Fig. 2 and Fig. 3), such links being pivoted to the frame wing extension 39 and to the bar. A nut 46 carried by the bar is in threaded engagement with an adjusting screw 41 at the end of shaft 48, the opposite end of the shaft being provided with a hand wheel 49 and positioned by stop collars 50, 5| at each side of a bracket 52 which projects from the frame member 5 and in which the shaft 48 is journaled. By rotating the hand wheel 49 to oscillate the guide bar 43 forwardly or backwardly, such bar is also caused to move inwardly and outwardly upon the respective links 44, 45 respecting the frame extension wing 39, thereby causing a corresponding reciprocation of the shaft 36 and parent roll 25 due to engagement of the guide spool 42 on such shaft with the bar 43.
The position of the parent roll and shaft 36 in the slots 31, 38 is determined by engagement of the periphery of the parent roll with a driving 51 for the shaft 59 upon which drum 55 is mounted. For driving the drum, I provide connections which desirably include change speed gearing. There is a pinion 60 on the main drive shaft 9 which meshes with a pinion 6| on a stud 62 projecting laterally from frame side 6. Below this, another stud at 63 adjustably carried on the crank 65, carries a change gear 66 which is merely an exemplification of any desired change speed mechanis mifor providing an accuratelydetermim. able rateiof operation of. the drumfid withl respect. to the shaft 9 which operates the conversion mechanism, whatever that may be.
A chain ear.
connected with the hub of the change speedgear 66 operates over suitable sprockets to di shaft 59 upon which drum 55 is mcunted.,;
An important feature of the inyent ior consists in the construction of drum55-to provides di's' continuous peripheral surface.
