Abstract

A traversing apparatus for yarn winding machines comprises a plate 23, Fig. 4 (not shown), on which the yarn rests whilst it is being traversed, and belts 16, 17 moving in opposite directions and carrying guide pawls 24, 25 that project above the level of the plate 23 at the commencement of a traversing action and sink downwardly during the traversing action. In Fig. 4 the pawl 25 on the belt 17 has just carried the yarn 45 from left to right and has sunk below the guide edge of the plate 23. The pawl 24 on the belt 16 is just about to engage the yarn and carry it from right to left. Fig. 5 (not shown) shows the position of the pawl 24 after it has carried the yarn from right to left, the pawl 24 having sunk to a level at which it releases the yarn and permits a further pawl 25 on the belt 17 to traverse the yarn to the right again. By passing the belts 16, 17 over suitably arranged pulleys they can serve on the traversing means for a plurality of winding machines arranged in a substantially end to end relationship. To ensure exact synchronism of the pawls 24, 25 the two belts 16, 17 may constitute overlapping portions of a single belt. Chains may be used instead of the belts 16, 17. The wound packages may be drum driven and biased against the drum by weighted lever means.
