Class 120(2) A roll winding or cop winding machine in which yarn is drawn over end from spinning bobbins has a tensioner and a movable member (which may be part of the tensioner) which is under the influence of the tension in the yarn on the supply side of the tensioner and which is loaded so as to assume a normal position as long as that tension is below a predetermined limit but is moved thereby when the limit is exceeded and, in moving shortens the path of the yarn and decreases the drag imposed by the tensioner, the movable member being so mounted as to respond immediately to sudden changes of tension and to make correspondingly sudden and substantial changes in the drag. In the embodiment shown, yarn is unwound from package 20 and passed round a smooth pulley 58, over a stud 62 on a pivoted lever 64 and around a second stud 63 to a traverse drum 52 and cheese 53. When the tension rises above a limit determined by a spring on pivot 66 the lever 64 swings to the position shown in chain-dot lines, thus shortening the yarn path and reducing the wrap around the friction studs 62, 68. Should the tension fall too low or vanish, the arm 70 pivots to release a latch lever 80 and bring into action a stop motion. In a second embodiment the invention is applied to a copwinding machine wherein the tension is applied by a row of double-disc type tensioners, the degree of engagement with the yarn being varied by a pivoted lever over which the yarn passes. A further embodiment comprises two jaws spring urged together and each carrying several studs or rollers which interengage, one of the jaws acting as the movable member and controlling the interengagement of the studs or rollers.
