Abstract

1,165,392. Winding slivers; twist tubes. N. SCHLUMBERGER & CIE. 11 Jan., 1967 [21 Jan., 1966], No. 1528/67. Headings DID and D1N. A false twist tube funnel 1 for traversing a sliver onto a cross-wound reel has a reciprocating rotational movement about its axis, a pivotal movement about an axis 3 at right angles to the axis of the winding-on roll 9 and a movement parallel to the axis of roll 9, the latter movements being synchronised so that the delivery end of the funnel moves along a line e-e 1 parallel to the axis of the roll 9. Twist tube 1 is rotatably mounted in a support (2), Figs. 2, 4 not shown, pivoted about an axis 3 on an arm 4 pivotally mounted on the machine frame at 5. Arm 4 is rocked to and fro by a crank mechanism (7, 36, 27) Fig. 3 not shown, and support (2) is rigidly attached to a rod 10 pivoted at 13 to a rod 11 pivotally mounted on the m/c frame at 12; thus the central point of the twist tube follows a path d while the tube itself is rocked by arm 10 to cause the delivery end to follow line e-e 1 . An oscillating rotary drive is transmitted to false twist tube 1 from a crank mechanism (16, 17, 31), Fig. 3 not shown via a toothed sector (15) rockable about shaft 5, gears (18, 21), chain (22), gear (23) on shaft 3 and finally via a bevel gear arrangement (24, 25) Fig. 2 not shown, to the twist tube. The crank mechanisms for arm 4 and the twist tube rotation are both adjustable for different length of package and different degree of twist; it is preferably arranged that the twist tube does not reverse its direction of rotation as the direction of traverse of the twist tube reverses. The twist tube is mounted in an easily releasable mounting to be replaceable for different materials. The simple harmonic motion of the rockerarm is accelerated in the region of its reversal point and slowed in the region of its central position to make the traversing speed of the funnel more nearly uniform; this is done by driving the crank mechanism through elliptical meshing gears or eccentrically mounted circular gears.
