Abstract

472,494. Winding yarns. LEEDHAM, L. H., and WILDT & CO., Ltd. March 23, 1936, Nos. 8682 and 19926. [Class 120 (ii)] In a yarn-winding machine the driving means for the winding spindle comprises two co-operating friction gear elements which rotate in planes transverse to one another and are supported so that the two parallel planes containing respectively the axes of the two wheels are displaced or offset from one another ; consequently, when, in starting the machine, the driven wheel is displaced relatively to the driving wheel, it is then automatically and gradually moved towards the periphery thereof to provide a smooth and steady acceleration of the winding spi dle. As shown the driven wheel 19 is fixed to a slidable shaft 20 connected by a belt 36 and pulleys to the winding spindle 34, and is driv n by the wheel 12, which is driven by the wheel 11 on the reciprocating shaft 10, so that the winding spindle is driven at a fluctuating speed. The shaft 20 is offset to one side of the centre line of the shaft 13 of the wheel 12, and is carried in a bracket 23 pivoted to the frame 27, and normally held by a spring 29 with the wheel 19 in contact with the wheel 12. When the machine is stopped the shaft 20 is slid so that the wheel 19 is disposed under the centre line of the shaft 13, a spring 42 then engaging a groove 41 in the end of the shaft 20 and holding the wheel 19 out of contact with the wheel 12. When it is desired to start the maching the shaft 20 is drawn forward so that the wheel 19 moves into contact with the face of the wheel 12 a little distance beyond the centre line of the shaft 13 when, due to the offset disposition of the shaft 20, the wheel 19 moves automatically towards the periphery of the wheel 20 to give a smooth and steady acceleration of the spindle 34. The shaft 20 may be actuated by a rod 45 connected to the forward end thereof and slidable in brackets 47, 49, a latch 55 pivoted in the bracket 49 and engaging the rod 45 being used to move the shaft 20 to the starting position ; the movement of the latch may be limited by a stop member 58 which may be provided with an adjustable abutment to engage the bracket 49 or the adjustable abutment may be provided on the bracket.
