[Class 120 (ii)] In a yarn winding machine the traversing guide, which is adapted to act in close proximity to, but spaced from, the surface of the package being wound, is caused to recede steadily from the winding spindle during the growth of the package independently thereof while being maintained in close proximity to, but spaced from the surface of the package. As shown the thread guide 15 is carried by a traverse bar 14 reciprocated in a frame 20 swingable on the shaft 22 from a cam on the shaft, the shaft also carrying a gear 26 connected through change gearing 27, 28 with the shaft of a reduction gear mounted on the frame. The low speed output shaft of the reduction gear is connected through a friction clutch arrangement with a pinion 54 engaging a rack 55 mounted on the machine frame so that as the package grows the pinion 54 rolls along the rack and causes the frame 20 with the traverse assembly to recede slowly from the spindle 6. The friction clutch may be disengaged to halt the swinging movement of the traverse frame by rocking a handle 66 against the action of a leaf spring 67, this movement rotating a rod 64, and bar 63 connected to a rod 61 which is lifted to rotate a bell-crank lever 58 and force one of the clutch discs away from the other against the action of a spring.
