[Class 120 (ii)] A machine for winding yarn on to a cone 10 has the winding spiral shaft 9 set at an angle to a hollow shaft 6 carrying a cone 8 having a frictional ring 8a engaging a cone 12 on the shaft 9, and the cone 8 is driven and slidable along a bar 5 carrying the shaft 10 so that, at the start of winding, the ring 8a engages the base of the cone 12 so as to give a slow start and then automatically moves along the cone 12 to give a gradual speeding up of the winding spindle and thereafter being gradually moved back to the base of the cone 12 so as to reduce the speed of the winding spindle as the package wound on the cone 10 increases in diameter and to give a slow finishing speed. The shaft 6 carries a wide driving pulley 7 and the winding spindle 9 is geared to the shaft 21 carrying a cam 20 for traversing the yarn guide 15 which is mounted in a slotted rod 18 carried by counterweighted arms 17 oscillatable on the shaft 21. The rod 18 carries an arm 19 having a ball 20 engaging the cone 8 and after the ring 8a has moved to the small end of the cone 12 to drive the spindle 9 at its maximum speed, the movement of the thread guide away from the spindle 9, as winding proceeds, moves the rod 18 and arm 19 and so pushes the cone 8 back along the bar 5 to reduce gradually the speed of the spindle 9. The bar 5 is carried by a support 5a pivoted on a rod 5b and having a projecting arm 5c which is disposed adjacent an arm 35 on a rod 31 which can be moved by a handle 32 against the action of a spring 33 surrounding the rod so that a hook 30 on the rod engages a hook 29 on a curved arm 22 pivoted in the machine frame and carrying a pivoted yam guide 13. The yarn guide 13 carries an arm 23 which, if the yarn breaks, moves into the path of a toothed wheel 24 on the shaft 21 and is moved thereby to lift the arm 22 and disengage the hook 29 from the hook 30 ; the spring 33 then rotates the rod 31 to move a brake shoe 34 thereon into contact with a brake drum 12a on the spindle 9 and the arm 35 into contact with the arm 5c so as to tilt the support 5a and move the cone 8 out of engagement with the cone 12. The slide carrying the thread guide 15 has an arm 26 pivoted thereto and held in engagement with the underside of the arm 22 by a spring 27 pressing against a thumb release piece 28 so that as the thread guide moves outwards, the counterweight 17a cannot move it back towards the winding spindle until the piece 28 is released.
