Abstract

716,906. Winding yarns. UNIVERSAL WINDING CO. April 9, 1952 [May 4, 1951], No. 9068/52. Classes 120(2) and 120(3) A winding machine comprises a rotary winding spindle, a yarn traversing guide, a source of power for rotating the spindle and operating the guide, and' means for positively moving the spindle away from the guide in direct proportion to the increase in diameter of the package being wound on the spindle. Means actuated by the separation of spindle from guide are preferably arranged to reduce gradually the speed of the power source. Yarn Y from a supply package is led through a tension device, Fig. 15, comprising a driven disc 320, having a number of radial clearing grooves 354, against which a plate 342 is pressed by the force of a permanent magnet 360 (not shown), the distance between the magnet and the plate '342 being automatically increased, as the package grows, so that the tension imposed on the yarn is progressively reduced. The magnetic force upon the plate 342, and hence the thread tension. may be initially adjusted through a plate 370. The disc 320 is driven by the shaft 132 which also drives the stop motion device, the operative part of which, namely a bar 124, bears against the yarn Y. Guides 376, 378, 384 assist in threading-up the tension device. The yarn is taken up by a core 18 held on an expansible mandrel 229, the yarn end being gripped between the core and the mandrel. The action of clamping a core by expanding the mandrel; by use of a lever 230, also, through a link 236, turns a lever 238 against spring-pre'ssure 224 to move a rod 208 axially of a hollow shaft 190 so that a cam face 210 on the rod moves a finger 202 outwardly to cause a projection 212 thereon to release a pawl 198 on a snail-cam 140 from ratchet teeth 194 so that a spring 214 can rotate the cam 140 to its starting position. A roller 94 (not shown) carried by a link attached to the starting lever 80 is contacted by the cam 140 when the lever 80 is depressed,. the core 18 then being positioned near to the yarn traverse guide 28. Depression of the starting lever 80 brings a latch 98 into operative relationship with a keeper 106 (not shown) to maintain the roller 94 in winding position. At the same time an arm 84 releases a brake 76 from a clutch' member 66 to allow a spring 74 (not shown) to bring a clutch plate 60 into engagement with a clutch face 58 on a pulley 56 to drive pulleys 42, 44 from an electric motor through a belt 248. Pulley 42, through belt 46, drives the spindle 34 carrying the package core 18, while pulley 44, through belts 32, 52, drives the cam shaft 26, which reciprocates the yarn traverse guide 28. The rotation of the spindle 34 drives the cam 140 through reduction gear 142, 144, 186, 188, which may be adjusted to vary the pressure upon the package the rotation of the cam 140 causing the housing 36, carrying the shaft 34 and package core 18, to pivot gradually away from the traverse 'guide 28, about the shaft 38. As the housing 36 moves outwardly, an arm 134 thereon moves an arm 290 to move a cam slot 298 so that a shaft 267 engaged therein, is operated to vary the disposition of belts 268 272 on a variable speed pulley 260. The slot 298 is shaped so that the pulley 260 is not adjusted for the first part of the swing of the housing 36 which may be varied as to its extent so that the spindle speed remains constant,' but that for the remainder of the swing of the housing 36, which may also be varied, the spindle speed is gradually reduced. When the package has attained a predetermined size, the latch 98 is rotated from the keeper 106, so that a spring 96 lifts the lever 80 to stop the winding. Similarly, if the yarn breaks, the bar 124 is released to allow a lever 110 to pivot and bring an abutment 128 into contact with the teeth of a wheel 130' driven by the shaft 132. The lever 110 is then pivoted to bring the latch 98 from its keeper 106. As the lever 80 is raised, the brake 76 is moved against the clutch member 66 to disengage the clutch, to. stop the drive to the spindle and traverse cam. At the same time the roller 94 (not shown), against which the cam 140 normall<SP>y</SP> presses, is moved away from the cam.
