Abstract

524,490. Winding thread. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. April 29, 1939, No. 12880. Convention date, May 12, 1938. [Class 120 (ii)] In a machine for winding thread from a supply by a power-driven take-up package the thread is pulled from the supply and delivered to the take up package at a substantially uniform tension by a snubbing drum around which the thread is looped for substantially a complete circle, the drum being driven at a surface speed in excess of the winding speed of the thread so that the tension in the thread controls the speed at which it is pulled from the supply by the snubbing drum. As shown an elastic thread T passes from a swift 39 to a booster pulley 42 around which it passes before being looped around the snubbing drum 43 by which it is delivered to the traversing guide 34 of the winding head 11. The thread-engaging portions of the pulley 42 and drum 43 are smooth and highly polished and have a surface speed of 10 or 20 times that of the travel of the thread and the drum is tapered to facilitate the spacing of the coil of thread looped around it. The pulley and drum are secured to shafts in a bracket 46 and the shafts carry discs 50, 53 engaging the periphery of a friction driving disc 54 driven by a belt from the shaft 19 ; the bracket 46 is supported for slight rocking movement on a pin 47 so that the discs 50, 53 may engage the disc 54 with substantially the same pressure. The bracket supporting pin 47 is -mounted in a housing 57 pivoted in a yoke bracket 59 and by grasping a hook 61 at the upper end of the housing the latter may be swung outwards to stop the rotation of the drum and pulley, a spring 62 normally urging the drum and pulley into driving positions; the housing is held in its outward position by a spring latch 64 engaging the bottom wall of the housing and the latch is disengaged from the housing to allow the spring 62 to move the housing so that the pulley and drum are driven, by depressing it with the foot. The shaft 19 is driven from a motor 20 and drives the winding spindle 12 by a belt 16 passing through a guide 17 and the traverse cam 28 is driven by a belt 26 from the spindle 12. The thread guide 34 and associated parts are mounted in a housing 30 pivotally mounted on the traverse cam shaft 27, a roller 32 rotatably mounted in the housing resting against the thread package and serving to smooth the coils and lead the thread downwards to the underside of the package. The winding head 11 is mounted on a pivot 35 and is normally held in the winding position by a lever 36 engaging a latch 38 on the head but when it is desired to stop winding the lever 31 is depressed so that the pulley 15 on the winding spindle is lowered and the'belt 16 slackened to stop the drive to the spindle 12. A slub catcher 44 is arranged between the pulley 42 and drum 43.
