Abstract
474,109. Winding yarns &c. ABBOTT MACHINE CO. Oct. 28, 1936, No. 29309. Convention date, Oct. 29, 1935. [Class 120 (ii)] In a drum winder having the axis of the winding spindle inclined to the axis of the drum or driving roll, the winding spindle is formed with an extension inclined to its axis and movably carried by a swinging arm and means are provided to rotate the spindle and its extension during the growth of the conical winding package so as to increase the angularity of the spindle relative to the driving drum or roll, and to compensate for the tendency of the spindle to assume a skewed relation to said drum. As shown the inclined extension 35 of the winding spindle 36 is housed in a casing 33 fixed in the swinging arm 15 which is carried by a pivot 16 in the frame 13 and a plunger 51, slidable in the casing, engages a cam 50 on the frame 13 and is connected to the extension 35 by a dog 54 which is carried by a pivot 55 in the casing and apertured to receive a ball 57 on a pin fixed in the extension 35. The plunger 51 is forced upwards into the casing as the arm swings upwards and causes the extension 35 to rotate about its axis and move endwise during the growth of the package; the taper of the package is thus gradually increased and the concavity of the package at the tip thereof and the convexity at the base is increased during the winding of the package. The cone 44 on which the package is wound is mounted on tapered parts 43, 46 of a hub 39 carried by bushings 40, 41 on the spindle 36, and is secured to the hub by prongs 48 pressed outwards into the cone by springs 49 ; the cone is released from the prongs 48 on completion of the package by moving a conical rim 63 to engage the outer faces of the ends of the spring and move them inwards, the rim being mounted on a sleeve 34 on the casing 33 and being moved, against the action of a spring 65, by rotating a handle 68 on the rim which has a cam slot 67 engaging a pin 66 projecting from the sleeve 34. The package is pressed against the driving roll 11 during the winding by a spring 72 which engages a roller 71 on an extension 70 of the crank 23 connected to the lifter arm 16a by which the package is raised from the driving roll on the completion of the winding or on failure or breakage of the yarn; the spring prevents the return of the package to the driving roll after it has been raised therefrom or the spring can be rendered inoperative during the winding, so that it engages the roller 71 only when the package is raised, by turning a latch 77 on the frame to engage the end of the spring. The tension of the yarn &c. is increased during winding towards the tip of the cone by passage of the yarn under a stationary inclined wire 83, Fig. 8, which is disposed between the tension device and slub catcher 81, and the traversing yarn guide 26 and adjacent the bail 82 over which the yarn passes and which rises, to cause the raising of the package from the driving roll, when the yarn breaks or fails. The invention is described as applied to a multiple winding machine of the type disclosed in U.S.A. Specification 1,911,047, in which a number of winding packages are moved in a closed path along driving rolls 11.
