Abstract

840,579. Winding yarns. UNIVERSAL WINDING CO. Feb. 11, 1958 [March 8, 1957], No. 4457/58. Class 120(2). A winding machine for winding a continuously advancing strand of yarn comprises a rotatable spindle for rotating a package receiving core, a surface carried by the spindle arid so positioned theron that the strand of yarn will extend thereacross prior to the start of a winding cycle, a yarn engaging member adjacent said surface and means for causing this member to catch the yarn when the spindle is rotating at a predetermined speed. The Figures show a winding machine having a winding head 10 mounted on a pedestal 11. Winding head 10 includes a spindle 12 journalled adjacent a frame 13. The latter is pivotally mounted to base 14 by means of shaft 15 to permit spindle 12 to swing toward and away from traverse guides 16 which are reciprocated by a barrel cam (not shown). Running strands of yarn, Y and Y<SP>1</SP>, pass downwardly through a guide 28, around guides 30 and 31 carried by compensator arm 32 and up to package receiving cores 21 mounted on spindle 12. The speed of spindle 12 is regulated by a control circuit and mechanism actuated by the strands of yarn which move compensator arm 32 according to the tension in the yarn. An arm 23 fixed to frame 13 so as to pivot therewith is connected to a shaft 24 journalled in pedestal 11, by link 25 cam plate 26, arm 27 and slotted lever 28 to rotate shaft 24 as frame 15 pivots in a clockwise direction in Fig. 1 to decrease the force which must be exerted on compensator arm 32 to lift said arm. Spindle 12 is provided with any convenient expansible arbor 20 for releasably gripping cores 21 and is operable by lever 22. A cap 35 is fixed to the outermost end of spindle 12 and has a frustoconical nose 37 and an annular flange 38. A slot 40 is formed in the periphery of flange 38 and has a pivotally mounted yarn engaging member 41 therein which member is spring urged inwardly of the cap with its finger 42 retracted into slot 40. At the commencement of winding the running strands of yarn are guided across the nose 37 to an aspirator 50 (Fig. 3) which collects the yarns advanced between the completion of one winding cycle and the commencement of the next. Spindle 12 is started and when it reaches a predetermined speed member 41 is urged radially outwards by centrifugal force to catch the running yarns and start them winding on cores 21. Specifications 751,166 and 787,129 are referred to.
