Abstract
492,053. Yarn - winding machines. AYRTON & CO., Ltd., W., and OSBORNE, F. April 5, 1937, No. 9541. [Class 120 (ii)] The shifting mechanism of the belt connecting the speedadjusting cones in the driving mechanism of a machine for winding thread, yarn and the like is held by a ratchet and detent ; the detent is released at intervals by operation from the cam box as the package diameter increases so that the belt is shifted to reduce the speed of the spindle carrying the package. This arrangement avoids the transmission of vibration and belt pull to the yarn guides. Two spindles b, b<1>, used as described in Specification 438,739, are shown, and are driven by a belt i<1> through variable speed mechanism consisting of reversed cones f, g connected by a belt e which can be shifted by the structure e<1> sliding upon supports e<2>. This structure e<1> is connected by a link e<3> to a lever h attached to a shaft h<1> in bearings h<2> ; the shaft is also attached to an arm k which carries a bracket k<1> supporting a toothed quadrant or rack m. Both the bracket and the quadrant are adjustably mounted. A detent n3 is mounted in a boss n<2> on an arm n<1> which moves with the cam box a and can be manually operated by means of the handle n. The point h3 on the lever h is joined by a flexible connection h<4> to a weight h<6> which tends to move the belt shifting mechanism to reduce the speed of the spindles b, b<1>, and the point j<1> on the lever h is connected to the treadle j<7>, depression of which pulls the belt shifting mechanism back to zero against the pull of the weight h<6>. The cam box a has yarn guides c, c<1> bearing on the windings and as these increase in diameter the detent n<3> is lowered until it is disengaged from ratchet tooth, and the weight h<6> moves the lever h, the arm k, and the quadrant m forward until the next tooth is stopped by the detent. This movement causes the belt e to be shifted to diminish the speed of the spindles.
